Sidney County Fireworks Day Schedule at Legion Park

A full day of events at Legion Park includes noon church bells, Boy Scouts flag raising, 1 p.m. registration, 1:30 p.m. children's parade, 2:30 p.m. games and music, and 3:30 p.m. demolition derby at Cheyenne County Fairgrounds. Evening highlights include a 201 gun salute at Lodgepole Camp, lodge dedication by Monica McNish, a 7 p.m. vesper service, 8 p.m. candle service, and a 9:15 p.m. fireworks display at Verde Dam.

Southern Panhandle July Fourth Celebrations Across Communities

Communities including Dix Kimball Harrisburg Oshkosh and Big Springs join Sidney for Bicentennial events this weekend with parades games contests and a band concert. Bridgeport hosts a demolition derby and a firework display at Verde Lane Dam plus a church service and various activities across the day.

Wheat harvest in southern Panhandle expected to start soon

Wheat cutting may begin within a week to 10 days as southern Panhandle fields show mixed prospects. Poorer land could yield little beyond cost of harvesting while later varieties and non fertilized fields may deliver higher bushels per acre, with prices around 3.10 to 3.15 per bushel.

Sidney Fourth of July display seeks $700 to finish

Organizers say $700 is still needed to fund this year’s 90 minute aerial fireworks show. More than 300 pieces valued at $3,000 are on hand for Sundays event at Verde Lane Dam in south Sidney. Hartzler and Schiel call it Cheyenne County’s largest display, with parking at the site and no admission fee.

North Dakota group to present Bicentennial program here

The Magic Globe Players from Bismarck will bring a free Bicentennial themed show to Sidney at Legion Park this Saturday at 4 am. They will involve audience participation and use varied dramatic techniques in a program about American history. The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Mrs Jaycees and Sidney Lions Club sponsor. The troupe also plans a Kimball performance at 5 30 pm Sunday.

Cable Buried to Improve Toll Link Between Sidney and Bridgeport

Northwestern Bell plans to bury the telephone toll cable from Bridgeport to Sidney. Don Schroeder says the final underground line will enhance toll facilities and protect against storms, vandals, and accidents. Filsinger Excavating Co. of Sidney handles the project begun in Bridgeport and nearing Dalton this spring, with completion targeted for summer. The 8 by 8 foot concrete structures will house signal amplifying coils, spaced about every five miles.

Sidney housing project nears groundbreaking after federal forms

The Sidney Housing Authority moves toward breaking ground on an elderly complex after two years of planning. HUD requires an affirmative action booklet listing female workers and minority suppliers and ethnic origins of board members. Vince Maliszewski, once on the authority, has moved to North Platte.

Bauman Named to Basin Water Policy Committee

Sidney City Councilman Ed Bauman was appointed to represent Sidney on a proposed policy advisory committee for the South Platte River Basin. J Garcia was named alternate. The panel will link to a basin water quality management plan and study non point pollution sources, with meetings planned in Sidney or Ogallala and an organizational session in late summer. The committee will have elected officials and other representatives and may advise on programs and regulations.

Dedication Move For Sidney Interstate 80 Sculpture

The dedication for Sidney's Roadway Confluence moves to the sculpture site near the east Sidney interchange over Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp and requires attendees to reach the site via Sunol on US 30 due to Nebraska State Patrol traffic restrictions. Sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp reports the base poured and three pieces arriving by truck with installation planned Thursday.
