Cheyenne County wheat looks promising yet fragile as a hot week risks ruin. Photographs from a field north of Sidney show big heads and shoulder high stalks across southern Panhandle Nebraska and into northeastern Colorado. Growers fear a quick scorch or a single storm could erase a year’s work within two weeks if heat continues.
The wheat harvest is forecast to begin in Holdrege and McCook with North Platte slated to start next week. Alliance July 10 to 20 is estimated, Alma and McCook Holdrege areas report good conditions, frequent readings above 100 degrees. Crop observers note turning heads, large kernels, some smut and red rust, moistened ground aiding fill, Nebraska Panhandle calls crop excellent though concerns rise if wet humid weather returns.
In July 1928 Potter reigned as the scene of the largest hail stone in U.S. history, weighing about 14 pounds and exceeding five inches in diameter. While giant stones are rare, walnuts to baseball sized hail is common in the Great Plains. The storm struck July 26, 1928, a record that may stand as research on hail suppression advances.
A hot windy weekend in Nebraska's southern Panhandle brought blowing dust and scattered rain. Sidney reported temperatures over 100 with dust storms and minor electrical outages, while Dalton saw up to .33 inch of rain during the fireworks storm. Bridgeport suffered downed power lines, a moved barn, and damaged roofs, with Northport reporting large trees split and trailer damage.
Sgt Timothy M Kennedy, 22, Francis E Warren Air Base Cheyenne Wyoming, drove a 1968 Chevrolet pickup north on a county road seven miles west and nine and a half miles north of Sidney when he swerved to avoid a mud puddle. The vehicle rolled one turn into an east ditch injuring him with a deep laceration to his left palm and a small cut behind his right ear. Passenger unharmed. Damage estimated at 1500 dollars.
Oil operators in the Southwest Sidney field report swabbing tests at No 1 B Hurt. Seven barrels of fluid per hour recovered, about half oil, with oil content increasing. No. 1 B Hart, an old well worked after abandonment, has become fifth oil producer on this land this year, boosting Nebraska oil prospects.
Forecast calls for light afternoon and early night thunderstorms with a chance of a few severe storms tonight. Highs in the 90s today and Tuesday, lows in the 60s. Rain chances 50 percent this afternoon and tonight, 30 percent Tuesday. Wednesday to Friday expect showers and thunderstorms mainly Wednesday, with highs 85 to 95 and lows in the upper 50s and 60s. The past weekend brought unprecedented high summer heat in Sidney with unofficial readings around 102 degrees downtown and near 100 on Sunday. Winds were strong and a thunderstorm produced little rainfall, with the heaviest in the north of Dix at a half inch. Farmers worry continued heat may hurt wheat kernels as FAA readings show Friday 59 90, Saturday 65 98, Sunday 60 95, and today 58 71.
An unusual tie occurred in the Community Action Agency runoff for low income representative as Mary Pringle and Delores Virgil split the Thursday ballot at the senior citizens center. Runoff voting is scheduled Wednesday July 1 from six to eight pm at the same center. For information call Sally Ditmar at 254-2179 or 254-4845.
A surge of arrests over two to three weeks shows many minors in possession of beer, mostly Coors, likely purchased in Colorado. Nebraska age rules create cross border issues as cases pile before County Judge Sydney Finch. Authorities note few intoxication charges and call for uniform age laws to curb the problem in Sidney and Cheyenne County.
The Potter and Dix Fire Departments will jointly stage the county’s only public fireworks show on Friday evening July 3 at Point of Rocks. The Dalton display is canceled this year, likely drawing larger crowds, with the hat passed to cover observance expenses.
Sidney police logged multiple weekend crashes resulting in injuries to two local boys. incidents include a 13 year old on a sidewalk strike, two docked vehicles with minor damage, and several parking lot collisions. One driver, Joseph Gehringer of Omaha, was charged with running a red light after a collision at 12th and Illinois.
An 11 year old Sidney girl Donna Marie Needham died Saturday at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver after months of illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev Leonard Suhr officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are directed to the Church of the Nazarene.
Kenneth Weber, a Social Security representative, will hold sessions at the Sidney Employment Office every Wednesday in July from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Residents with Social Security questions are urged to contact him.
Sidney volunteer firemen responded Saturday at 11 20 a m to a grass fire along the railroad right of way two miles east of Colton. A passing train is believed to have caused the blaze with no damage reported.

A 23-pound bobcat trapped by an REA pole near Potter died after climbing the line, reported by Mrs. Harold F. Brown. Linemen Harold Brown and Bob Popham received an outage call, then removed the animal next daylight. The incident adds to a history of wildlife encounters causing line service problems.
Nebraska state tax data show 1969 sales tax collections fell from 1968 totals due to a lower rate. The 2 percent rate, in effect since 1967, was reduced in 1969 before returning to 2 percent, with total sales and use tax receipts reaching 68.97 million. Sidney reported 380,158 in 1969, down from 435,609 in 1968, alongside figures for other cities such as Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, and Columbus.
Richard Krause, former Dalton superintendent, resigns as Chadron State College director of admissions effective August 1 to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Wyoming. He will be succeeded by Jacque Schmiedt.
