Flood Damages To County Bridges Reach $127,000

Cheyenne County faced flash floods on May 15 and 24 causing about 127,210 dollars in damage mainly to bridges and drainage structures. Road commissioner Orville Smith says a report to the State Highway Department may qualify for federal aid, with 40 bridges heavily damaged and repairs added to the total.

County's Oldest Native Son George Minshall Dies At 83

George E. Minshall of Lodgepole, Cheyenne County's oldest native son, died Sunday at Memorial Hospital at 83. Born May 11, 1882 in Sidney, he spent most of his life in Lodgepole, serving as postmaster, running a telephone company, and a grocer. He married Helen Petteys in 1910 and had two daughters. He was active in Masons, Shriners, Eastern Star, and local old settlers work. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, three grandchildren, and many relatives. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Lodgepole Methodist Church. burial in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Morrison Allows Income Tax Bill to Become Law

Gov. Frank Morrison announced this morning he will let LB797 become law without his signature. The move aims to quicken anti tax broadening forces to push the issue to a referendum at the November 1966 election. The income tax takes effect January 1967, while a sales tax proposal by Sen. George Gerdes and co-signed by Sen. George Fleming was killed by the Legislature last week.

Hogs Hit 24 Top at Regular Sale in Sidney

Hogs topped at 24 dollars at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion on Saturday, the highest in the region. Nebraska and Colorado growers sent 220 head, with heifers averaging 637 pounds fetching 24.50 and steel calves reaching 31.50. Cattle prices were generally steady as Dave Truss, the manager, announced another sale for the following Saturday despite the holiday.

Freights Collide Near Pine Bluffs Nonsensical Nine Hour Tie Up

Two Union Pacific freight trains collided on a Pine Bluffs crossing after a stalled car caused a switch misroute. One locomotive and 33 cars overturned, nine front cars derailed, lumber cars derailed, debris scattered, and mainline traffic blocked for about nine hours with no injuries reported.
