Pioneer Airways Presents Nebraska Route Proposal

Pioneer Airways of Denver outlined plans to serve nine Nebraska communities including Alliance Chadron McCook Kearney Hastings Columbus Lincoln Omaha and Sidney with a Denver connection. The plan envisions 10 daily flights from Sidney using Cessna 402 Utililiner aircraft with about 70 employees and fare levels aiming to be 30 percent cheaper than Frontier. Community approval and financial backing were emphasized as crucial.

Sculpture to Arrive and Erect in Sidney on July Fourth

Sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp arrives in Sidney Saturday to start erecting the Roadway Confluence Bicentennial sculpture at the east Sidney rest area. The piece is finished and was to be assembled as a dress rehearsal in New York today and will reach Sidney by midweek for on site assembly. Volunteers from Capitol Bridge Co and Metro Paving Co provide concrete and workmanship, with dedication planned for July 4. Mrs John Elwell coordinates, and organizers invite groups to hear the sculptor speak during his 10 days in the area, with slides of his work available.

Redingtons Bicentennial Celebrated With Church Service Tour

Redington marks its 1886 founding with a 11 am church service and a carry-in dinner, followed by a 2 pm historical tour of local sites two miles east of Redington. Free refreshments, entertainment, and an antique display will close the day. The Holmeses note Redington’s early boom included multiple shops and a telephone company, with death date for founder H V Redington not yet confirmed.

Old cars roll through Sidney on Lincoln Highway tour

A 45 member Lincoln Highway Bureau caravan on a six day, 950 mile journey from Dyer Indiana to Cheyenne Wyoming travels in vintage vehicles from a 1924 Model T to a 1954 Buick. The group stops at historic sites and a ranch near Grand Island while Iowa towns flag the route as a Bicentennial celebration.

Rain brings limited relief to drought battered wheat fields

Rain across the southern Panhandle Tuesday night offered some help to pastures and crops but came too late to save much of the wheat. Nebraska farmers report varying yields from near 20 to 30 bushels per acre despite showers. winds and late May frost severely damaged fields. Local gauge readings ranged from 1 to 3 inches with some spots near Gurley reporting 3 inches.

Gillespie sale tops $525,000

Bridgeport buyers Dave and Cole Harvey of Fort Collins purchased 2,720 acres of Gillespie family farm and pasture near Dalton and the Morrill county line for over 525000. The Cedar Creek Fish Hatchery tract of 160 acres brought 600 per acre, while other parcels sold to Tom Walsh, Leon Gillespie, Cleve Gillespie, Clayton Gillespie, and Roy Weborg at various rates. The Gillespie homestead dates to 1907.

Big Oktoberfest tent expanded for Sidney event

A 60 by 180 foot tent is ordered for the Sidney Oktoberfest October 1 to 3, larger than last year's 40 by 140 foot tent. The festival site is Legion Park, with a 62 by 130 foot blacktop area ahead of the Shelter House. Booths for concessions remain available through the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. Ron Reichert, 41, is named new Sidney Public Schools superintendent, moving from Millard Nebraska with his wife.

Cheyenne County Bicentennial Quilt Shown in Sidney Display

The 16 scene blue and white Bicentennial quilt, a joint project by Cheyenne County residents, is on display at the Sidney Senior Citizen Center. Scenes were provided by the Cheyenne County Historical Society with embroidery by youth groups and quilting by seniors, to be permanently housed at the Post Commander's Home after a July 4 presentation.
