Oil Rigs Jump Across Nebraska's Western Oil Patch

Reporting weekly activity shows 33 rigs drilling in western Nebraska with Kimball County hosting 18 and Cheyenne County four. Of the total, 12 are wildcats and 21 field wells. year to date 274 locations listed, 12 discoveries, 95 wildcat drifts, 54 field wells completed, 70 abandoned.

Bridgeport Fourth of July Rodeo Plans Revealed

Bridgeport readies its annual Fourth of July Rodeo to be held Friday and Saturday July 4 and 5 at the fair grounds arena. Evening shows begin about 7 39 with bareback and saddle bronc riding calf roping bulldogging clown acts and exhibitions. Fireworks and a firemen sponsored dance cap the program. The Morrill County Fair Association owns 32 bucking stock and will feature General the Brahma bull.

Potter Man Joins Air Force Flight

Vaughn E Russell son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Russell of Potter enlisted in the Air Force. His family drove him to Cheyenne to catch a bus to Denver. He checked in June 13 at Lackland AFB Texas and his address is AF 17517435 Flight 449 Box 1503. He reports excellent treatment and strong interest in the training and service.

Pay Raise To Help Workers In This Area

Civil Service workers in Sidney greet a 10 percent pay raise, retroactive to Jan 12, with lump sum back pay ranging from 153 to 500 dollars, averaging about 250, for about 265 base workers at Sioux Ordnance Depot and thousands nationally. Nebraska insiders estimate 12 thousand federal employees will share the $5.5 million increase, with postal workers also receiving a raise.

Fire Whistle To Alert Alliance

Alliance sets a new warning system using the fire whistle for violent weather disasters or attacks. City Manager R W Laing notes the steam whistle remains for fire calls but will switch to a steady tone for disasters. Two blasts summon nurses and hospitals to St Josephs Hospital. three blasts warn of tornadoes or enemy action.

Lessees of the Mobil Station at 1745 Illinois announce a grand opening event for Thursday and Friday. Operated by Les Landmesser Gary Campbell and Bob Roberts the station named Ma-Ru-Ju Mobile derives from their wives’ initials. Free Pepsi-Cola with every six gallons purchased and door prizes available to registrants. Winners appear in the July 2 issue of The Sidney Telegraph.

New Trial Denied in Backer Lawsuit

District Judge I J Nisley overruled a retrial motion in the Backer case in Cheyenne County District Court. The Backers George and Mollie, residents of Scottsbluff, sued the city of Sidney over damages from the underpass project. The case has been tried twice with juries ruling for the city each time. they have ten days to appeal to the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Nebraska students begin summer journalism internships

Fourteen junior journalism majors from the University of Nebraska will take internships this summer to fulfill certificate requirements. Among them three will work locally with Minette Taylor reporting for the Western Nebraska Observer in Kimball, Bob Wirz with the Alliance Times Herald, and Rita Jane Carroll in Scottsbluff at the Star-Herald. Director William E. Hall noted ten will work on daily papers, two in agricultural journalism, one in television, and one in the weekly newspaper field.

Deputy Secretary Rol land Luedtke reports sponsors of a constitutional amendment to legalize bingo have until July 3 to file all petitions. Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fraternal Order of Eagles expect to file with Secretary Frank Marsh, aiming for over 60 thousand names. 56,794 signatures are needed for the November ballot, with rejections common. The groups may file additional petitions before the deadline.

Neal Atkins Named To Retailers Post

Neal Atkins of Sidney was named district representative of the Department and Variety Division of the Retail Merchants Association of Nebraska. Five districts were set up statewide with a leading retailer as District Representative for each line. Atkins will coordinate the Northwest District covering 20 counties as a membership drive and district meetings proceed to aid retailers in serving the public.

Wheat Quota Referendum Sees Low Cheyenne County Support

In Cheyenne County only 459 of 318 votes favored the federal wheat marketing quota, far below the two thirds needed. Nationally 83.7 percent supported quotas though Cheyenne’s results reflected local disfavor, with 10,025 Yes and 3,906 No in Nebraska’s tally.

New Mechanic At Foland Farm Machinery

Frank Schuppan named new service man and mechanic at Foland Farm Machinery per owner Doyle Foland. He brings 15 years with Minneapolis Moline and three years as a travelling service man in Nebraska.
