Scattered rains have fallen across Cheyenne county easing heat but major moisture gaps persist. Farmers fear dwindling wheat and corn yields. grain dealers project wheat near 80 cents per bushel by harvest and corn around 30 cents this fall amid ongoing drought relief hopes.
PT delegates from six Nebraska district towns will travel to Sidney Monday to meet Mrs Arthur C Watkins a national fish worker returning from Seattle. Mrs F A Bush district president arranged invitations. meeting at 10 30 am in the city auditorium with lunch to follow. Watkins will arrive on the eastbound UP at 10 20 am.
The board of equalization last week raised the Western Public Service Company value from 179000 to 200000 after lengthy discussion. A planned move to 279000 was dropped as valuations were reviewed. Several other adjustments were ordered and a trip to Lodge Pole was planned to inspect properties for a fair figure.
Bishop George A Beecher and three youths abandoned their attempt to retrace the Deadwood trail by horseback and wagon on Monday due to unsuitable trails for the horses. They returned to Hastings.
Secretary Wallace warned the United States might dump its surplus wheat on world markets if other producers fail to agree on restrictive measures. Reports of crop damage and Wallace’s speech to the National Millers Federation boosted prices in Chicago and Kansas City. He cited a 250 million bushel surplus and warned against plans to raise acreage, noting potential 800 to 900 million bushel crops with an extra 200 million bushels in surplus. He stressed there is no market for such excess.
The county board on Tuesday recommended Governor Charles W. Bryan appoint Dr R E Roche of Sidney to the state relief agency. The action honors Roche for leading local employment efforts. A road petition calling for a two mill levy to improve a southeast Sidney corner was approved. The board of equalization met Wednesday and upheld all protested assessments.
A Sidney gathering on June 30 will bring many pioneers led by Captain Luke North of Columbus and A. Shel don of Lincoln. The event aims to recall Sidney’s early days with a luncheon, entertainment, and an afternoon session to discuss Cheyenne county history. Attendees over 56 years old attend free as honey guests. others can buy luncheon tickets for 35 cents at the telegraph office.
County Agent Willey explains a new wheat acreage reduction plan that will pay cash benefits on farm allotments for 1933 1934 and 1935. Farmers must reduce planted acreage in 1934 and 1935 by a percentage set by the secretary of agriculture not exceeding 20 of the farmer’s average over the last three years.
Franklin Barger son of Dr and Mrs F A Barger of Sidney has been awarded a Bonfils scholarship and the privilege of studying under Edwin McArthur celebrated New York voice instructor It was reported in the Denver Post Tuesday Barger one of the outstanding young tenors of the west was chosen from the limited scholarships from a field of several hundred Five states were represented by the artists seeking the awards The honor practically assures him the chance to become one of the nations outstanding tenors.
The Burlington displayed a new auto mobile freight car Tuesday morning carrying four Chevrolet motor cars for Kokjer Motor Company. The Evans loading device allows four cars on steel racks operated by chains and pulleys, eliminating blocking and rack building. The loader works from the car ceiling and racks pull into place along the space.
Stable of Nigh school and jumping horses under C W Zike anticipates a busy summer with major rodeo celebrations planned in nearby States. Arthur Zike trains three horses noted for trick and jumping events, including a 23 foot 4 inch high banner jump. Horses will perform at Krueger's Lake on July 4.
In the main event of the American Legion fight night, Clark of Cheyenne dominated Bud Logan of Cheyenne in a quick second round stoppage. A vicious right hook early in the second sent Logan crashing through the ropes. he lay dazed as Clark finished with a decisive knockout. Referee Parks did not need a count as Logan failed to rise.
Keneth Deaton, Cheyenne county convict, freed by the pardons board after a little over a year in the state reformatory for men on car theft charges. As he stepped from the gates, Milwaukee authorities claimed a similar count against him. Deaton had confessed to stealing cars with others last summer, took sole responsibility, and received two years in Lincoln reformatory.
A large crowd estimated at 1500 or more gathered at Krueger's Lake for the annual Farmers Union picnic. Temperatures fluctuated but hundreds remained into the afternoon enjoying entertainment and meals. Gurley defeated Dalton 17 to 4 in the Wheat Belt league baseball game. State president H Greeney and officials spoke as picnic events continued into the afternoon with Lodgepole keeping second place by beating Better 2 to 0.
The state engineer asks the federal government to redesignate Highway 19 from Sidney to the Colorado line as a federal aid route. If approved, it would gain federal repair funds and be listed as a main thoroughfare on principal maps. The route currently lacks federal designation and is treated as a minor trail between Sterling and Sidney, causing neglect.
Wheat Belt league managers met Monday night to keep the ten team circuit intact while ejecting two pitchers for alleged pitching business. Potter and Kimball were named as offending clubs and agreed to rely on home talent, keeping dollars in the treasury. With Sunday games looming, standings should not change much as the leaders eye easy victories though upsets remain possible. Peetz faces Dalton, and the top four teams appear set to coast unless Dalton adds a strong hitter or pitcher to fill the gap left by Ear Lessig’s departure.
Delegates at Lincoln Tuesday voted to carry the issue to the courts after debating whether to back the referendum or submit the matter to legal action. Superintendent Hutton indicated no action until beer sales begin August 10. He suggested lawyers form a test case and outlined a plan to copy and mail voter lists to dry committee members across precincts for further effort.
Krueger brothers unveil a grand 1933 Fourth of July program with a rodeo and racing meet at their grounds in western Nebraska. The event features eight world open horse races plus a pig race and a 1 2 mile chariot race, with high school and jumping horses trained by C W and Arthur Zike performing in the afternoon and evening. The grounds offer ample parking for hundreds of cars and extended space for the varied program designed to draw a large holiday crowd.
Maxine MicDonald of Sidney wins the one dollar first prize in The Telegraph News Fox Theatre coloring contest held in last Tuesday’s paper. Ten other youngsters win free tickets to The Big Cage at the Fox. Winners include Evelyn Attepury Amy Stark Ronald Coyle Betty Hockerson Karl Mueller Jr Jerome Short Jack Sullivan Merle T Lockwood Marjorie Morfeld Dorothy Schultz. Prizes available at The Telegraph News office. Tickets valid only for The Big Cage, show ends Saturday night.
Hog mange is becoming prevalent in the state especially Cheyenne County. Seven lots of mangy hogs are receiving regular treatments with crude oil crank case grease and lime sulfur in spray and dip forms at the Nebraska College of Agriculture. Prof W O Loeffel of the animal husbandry department leads the experiments and will report results.
Ed Meyer, a local horse race enthusiast, trains seven thoroughbreds for the upcoming summer season. He recently acquired the Andy Campbell stables at Greeley Colorado and trains daily for meets at Krueger's Lake Broken Bow Cheyenne North Platte and other venues. Everett Rossall of Twin Falls Idaho, a renowned jockey, has joined to ride for Meyer this season.
Congressman Terry Carpentier said he intends to run for governor during a Lincoln visit, citing western Nebraska deserves a Capitol leader. Senator McCarter and Norris weighed in on possible candidacies while the pre-announced contenders include Governor Bryan, William Ritchie, Senator Banning, and Senator I McCarter of Bayard.
