New low tax rate for banks stirs up Lincoln politicians
Nebraska's intangible tax law faces a Supreme Court ruling affecting bank stocks and related securities. Banks, loan and trust firms will be taxed at 5 mills, down from 70 percent of value, sparking Democratic and farming opposition and likely campaign controversy. The decision could repeal or reshape the intangible tax, with bankers warned of potential loss of revenue. The case stems from A Kirk, receiver of Old State Bank, versus Valley County.
