North Side Drainage Ditch Proves Practical and Planned Covering
Union Pacific engineers will lower the east ends of the north side drainage ditch by two feet and install 36 and 48 inch tile to handle the entire watershed including Hickory Street south of the right of way. After more than a year of council action to remove the drainage problem by covering the ditch, residents will see the covering completed. The ditch runs along Forrest Street from 13th Avenue to the stockyards, draining into the low lands. Continued on page 8.

North Platte Valley Beet Crop Imperilled By Lack Of Water
The North Platte valley beet crop faces a severe drought risk with the worst yield likely unless relief is found. Great Western Sugar officials and beet farmers met in Scotts Bluff to address the emergency as rainfall this year remains well below the ten year average and frost and winds have worsened soil moisture. The Interstate Commerce Commission order reduces freight rates on gasoline shipped to Nebraska and eastern Colorado dealers, saving an estimated $300,000 for about 400 Nebraska dealers. L. C.
