Soil Bank plan meets little cheer in Cheyenne County

Farmers report low enthusiasm for the six dollar per acre soil bank offer as the Department of Agriculture sets payments at 60 percent of appraised yields but not less than six dollars. Cheyenne County ASC head Don Rapp notes the state unit will cap payments at six dollars per acre due to time limits. A rural poll finds no one willing to reduce compliant wheat acreage for six dollars. Wilford Nelson calls for a Lincoln committee meeting to seek higher Nebraska wheat payments matching federal guidance. If yields data were used, payments could reach about thirty dollars per acre, possibly pushing some wheat land out of production to curb surpluses. Three eligibility paths exist: under planted due to weather, destruction from natural causes, or pre June 30 destruction of acreage. Set aside fields cannot be grazed or cropped. weeds must be controlled.
