Charles Dodds 49 Dies in Sterling

Charles Dodds 49 of Sterling died of a heart attack yesterday afternoon at his Sterling home. Funeral arrangements are pending with Jackson Mortuary of Sterling. He had worked for Shields Produce Co and later for Morey Mercantile Co. Survived by wife and two daughters.

Seven Cheyenne County residents graduated from the University of Nebraska during the 85th Commencement Exercises. Wanda Westerhoff of Sidney earned a B S with distinction, and others from Sidney include George W. Barlow Jr. a B S in Business Administration, Wendell Belieu and Carol Tremain both B S in Education, Arlina Harte a B S in Education with a Physical Education certificate, James Wamsley a Master of Science, Lloyd Graff of Dalton a B A in Arts and Sciences.

Nine Girls Seek Honor As 06 Queen In Sidney Pageant

Nine contestants vie for Miss Nebraska of 1956 with rehearsals tonight behind closed doors. The pageant opens tomorrow at the junior high and features talent from each entrant. Miss America Sharon Kay Ritchie and Miss Nebraska Sandra Speicher will present numbers. Tickets are $1.50 general and $2 reserved. Sidney Jaycees sponsor the event at the Nebraska Jaycee pageant.

Des Moines Girl Claimed Kidnapping Escapes in Sidney

A 20 year old Des Moines hospital worker said she was abducted at 5 am yesterday by a man driving a gray Iowa licensed Oldsmobile. She escaped in Sidney carrying a suitcase and returned home with police coordinating the case. Authorities plan to review the events and report their findings.

Museum Opens Early For Ft Sidney Days Displays

The Ft Sidney Days Museum in the Preble Building opened today for donations to a special display. Public opening is Thursday morning. People may donate historical articles and obtain rental costumes for Ft Sidney Days, with items stored by the Cheyenne County Historical Association after Ft Sidney Days ends. The building will be open tomorrow and Wednesday for owners and renters to visit.

License Suspension Promised In Court

Sidney Police Judge Glenn Greenlee vowed license suspensions for any motorist found guilty of a second offense speeding in the city. The penalties start at a 30 day minimum, with stronger action for drag racers already noted by City Prosecutor John Peetz Jr. Two drag racer license suspensions are already on record.

Joe Crumrine Dies in Florida Former Sidney Inspector

Joe Crumrine retired as Sidney city inspector last fall and moved to Florida where he died at St Petersburg Sunday morning. Funeral and burial will be in Gering with Boley Dennis Funeral Home in charge. He lived in Gering for years before moving to Sidney and is survived by his wife and a sister, Mrs Claude Bauder of Sioux Ordnance Depot. Cause of death unavailable.

Five Generations In Family Now Living

Five generations are represented in the Kahl family of Sidney as William Joseph Kahl, born June 8 at Memorial Hospital, joins two siblings and two children as the parents Duane and wife note. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs McIntosh and L W Kahl, with multiple greats and great greats on the maternal side including Mrs McIntosh, Mrs Thomas Quinn, Mrs ER Sanders, and Mrs J L McIntosh.

Location of Sidney Police Court Moved to City Hall

The Sidney Police Court was moved this morning from the police station to the City Council chamber in the City Auditorium. The shift is permanent. Police Chief Sol Willis cited better facilities, more space, and greater decorum for court sessions in the council room.

Soil Bank Payments May Be Made In Destruction Cases

The USDA announced new rules enabling soil bank payments for drought or other natural losses this year. Farmers who failed to plant portions of winter wheat or other crops due to adverse weather may receive four dollars per acre for unplanted land, with eligibility tied to yield, underplanting, and crop destruction certifications.

Purses and Auto Parts Stolen From Cars Near Dance

Five purses and two automobile fender skirts were stolen from cars parked at Krueger's Lake early yesterday. The theft occurred while drivers and passengers attended a local dance. All purses were later found under a tree, with $12 to $15 in change missing. Fender skirts remained missing, according to Sheriff Bill Schulz.

University of Nebraska in Lincoln hosts a Crops and Soils Field Day on June 22 to discuss the soil bank program. Prominent Lewellen Physician Is Killed

Dr Francis Vestey a 42 year old Lewellen physician was killed in a one car crash Friday on Highway 26 about a half mile east of Lewellen. Sheriff O R Roberts said he missed a slight curve on the elevated road causing the car to go off the edge and land 150 to 200 feet from the highway. He had lived in Lewellen about 15 years and operated the hospital there and was prominent in civic affairs.

Two With Foreign License Plates Fined

Neal Lindsey and Miss Jo Neeley pleaded guilty before County Judge C W Smith for registering their motor vehicles in foreign counties. Each was fined $5 and costs by the court.
