Fort Sidney boost ers plan Thursday and Friday tours as Fort Sidney Days activities loom. J Fred Thompson cites deadline for arrangements with float and display setup town wide. Big parades expected. ten minute ESID radio interviews start tonight to publicize the June 19 21 celebration.
Six Cheyenne County businesses were entered during the night of Thursday. Kreider's Implement Store in Lodgepole, Western Implement Company, May Machine Shop, Potter Equipment Company, Serfang Grocery Store, and Dean's Store were robbed. About $90 was taken from the machine shop and $50 from Potter Equipment, with cigars, a radio, vacuum sweeper, knives, and an electric razor reported missing. Authorities suspect a single group, possibly a vauderime band, but no suspects or leads have been found.
Nebraska officials await mandate on four mill school levy after a Supreme Court decision. State Auditor Ray Johnson advises Holt County Treasurer Herbert Stevens on collection options for taxpayers opposing the levy. If protests arise, taxpayers may either wait for rehearing outcomes or pay in full and seek refunds within thirty days. The ruling is not yet law and mandate delivery pending.
Dick Schaeffer of the Nebraska Fish and Game Commission will attend the Cheyenne County Wildlife Club meeting in the City Auditorium basement at eight o'clock Wednesday night. He will show two films, Trout Factory and Shooting Safety, according to George Fleming, club president. Schaeffer edits Outdoor Nebraska, the commission's official magazine with wide statewide circulation.
The school lease tied to Ernest Anderson of Potter was bid in at a $1000 bonus but rejected by the State Board of Educational Lands and Funds and ordered readvertised for sale. The land, grazing land with gas rights, lies near Anderson farmstead in Cheyenne County. Six counties offered leases with bonuses of 5 and 6 cents per acre at a Lincoln sale, totaling $9,868 from 35 tracts. Deals included 20 Sheridan county tracts bought by Shell Out company. other bids appeared in Custer, Franklin, Morrill, Lincoln and Wheeler counties. This was the first sale in several weeks.
Mr and Mrs James Handsel resign as managers effective Sunday. Earl Wood, former manager at Sterling Country Club, takes over. The Handsels and their daughter move into the clubhouse Monday as they relocate to California. No operational policy changes announced. The club will serve food daily except Monday.
Mrs William Dykman of Dalton Cheyenne County president of the American Legion Auxiliary has been chosen to serve as district page for the Department Convention at the Cornhusker Hotel Lincoln July 20 to 22 announced by Mrs George Hastings of Lincoln This honor places her among the highest awards for an auxiliary member.
Lee Girardot has been appointed agronomist for the Sioux O'Rdnance Depot. He started duties Monday and heads tree and shrub planting, erosion control, and related conservation work. Previously with the Soil Conservation Service, he served 14 years including chief conservationist for Cheyenne County SCD.
Cheyenne County 4-H winners of Conservation Camp will travel to Chadron from June 24 to 27 for a educational tour focused camp. Activities include a visit to the Federal Fish Hatchery near Crawford and the Nebraska Badlands, with special interest groups in archaeology nature study fish and game birds and wild animals and soil conservation. Dr C B Schultz University Museum director and L J Tanner assistant curator will attend.
W G Lowe reports active rent stabilization work in the Sidney Defense Rental Area led by a volunteer Rent Advisory Board. The panel, including Lawrence Marrin as chairman and members such as Ferris Preble and A C Petersor, supervises disputes brought after area rent office rulings. It aims for fair rents while protecting tenants, with public interest spokesmen as umpires to balance landlord and tenant concerns.
Caravan and Fort Sidney Day boosters plan two days of touring from Sidney on June 12 and 13. The Reverend Wright Johnson asks participants to register by calling him, with leaders Col Frea Lehmkuhl Lodgepole and Norma Benzel slated to headline. Stops include Peetz Sterlin Ogallala and Scottsbluff, ending at Sioux Ordnance Depot.
A 45 year old tourist Wm J Webber of Ennis Texas died Sunday at a local hospital after reporting ill while traveling with Kenneth Drake of South Bend Indiana en route from South Bend to Los Angeles. Webber collapsed just before an electrocardiograph and was attributed to a heart attack. The remains were sent to Ennis for burial via The Craig Mortuary. The incident occurred about 6 15 PM Sunday near Worth Platte and Sidney after a doctor visit.
Two one car accidents over the weekend yielded no injuries though damages were high. Alfredo H Magdaleno 1941 Ford coach northbound left the road into a barrow pit near the SOD main gate causing about 200 dollars in damage. A 1939 Ford coach driven by Jerry Williams went off Highway 30 west of Sidney after sliding over a cement abutment and rolling once and a half causing about 250 dollars in damage. A second crash on Highway 19 near Sidney involved a 1950 Chrysler driven by Gordon Evans and a 1950 Buick driven by Billie Dickinson with both sideswiped. damage estimated at 100 and 135 dollars respectively. No injuries reported.
Cheyenne County Junior Fair Board elected Keith Wilson Sidney and Stewart Brown Jr Sidney to three year terms at a county meeting with 26 in attendance from 15 4 H clubs. Holdovers include Gurley chairman Lawrence Sorge Claire Belle Koester Mary Ann Rufenacht and Shirley Groshans. Next week officers will be elected and committees set.
County clerks and treasurers from eight Western Nebraska counties met in Alliance to review a referendum set for November. If approved, motorists would pay current year car taxes when obtaining new license plates. State Highway officials noted revenue losses from residents moving before taxes are due and explained a possible two-step tax payment to avoid double taxation.
The 4-H Judging Day will be Friday June 13 with events at the Lemoyne Johnson farm two miles east five north and 34 west of Sunol and at the Sidney City Auditorium for clothing homemaking and cooking. Local 4-H members from Devel Kimball Garden and Cheyenne Counties are invited and expected to attend. Specialists include Chris Sanders of the Cooper Foundation directing dairy judging Donald R Warner from the University of Nebraska animal husbandry and 4H C Crandall from Curtis Agricultural College for livestock judging. Home making clothing and foods judging will be assisted by Miss Gerda Peterson Miss Alice Flowerday and Miss Dorothy Holstein all from Lincoln extension. Judging begins at 10 a.m. at both locations. Those heading to the Johnson farm should bring a sack lunch.

Cheyenne County records show 2.62 inches above average May rainfall bringing total near five inches, hinting at a potential twenty million dollar Panhandle crop worth about forty million.
