Moisture Boosts Panhandle Shortage but March Through May Remains Low
Rainfall for January to May 1963 in the southern Panhandle remains deficient with an average of 4.08 inches versus the normal 5.09. Recent showers improved the outlook for winter and spring crops and grazing, but the region still awaits fuller June precipitation to reach normal figures. Farmers report substantial planting progress including sorghum and soybeans, with some replanting due to a recent freeze, and potatoes, millet, and dry beans being established. Kenya’s Northern Province is noted as a traditional grazing area for Somalis with nomadic herds across the Horn of Africa.
