An estimated $1,000 damage occurred to a 1948 Chevrolet when its driver Melvin Gruening from Schofield Wisconsin fell asleep at the wheel and rolled over into a ditch on Highway 30 east of Sidney. Gruening and two Fort Warren soldiers were uninjured in the early Tuesday morning accident.

A Scotia Nebraska native he served 1.5 years in the army including nine months in Germany. He was discharged January 1947 and returned to the University of Nebraska to finish his studies majoring in entomology.

Hurt Funeral Held for James W Hurt in Sidney and Lorenzo
Funeral services for James W Hurt aged 69 were conducted Wednesday at the First Methodist Church in Sidney. He died Sunday at his Lorenzo home after an illness begun in February. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery with Craig Mortuary directing. He was born April 6, 1880 in Winterset and lived in Seward Nebraska, York, and Sidney. He married Ida Prohaska in 1923 at York. He is survived by his wife, a son Richard, three sisters in Lorenzo and York, and many relatives and friends.
