May brought 3.37 inches of rain to Sidney, the largest May total since 1935, with a brief late shower marking the month’s end. Through May, five months of 1938 have yielded over nine inches, aiding winter wheat conditions, while floods east of Lodge Pole disrupted traffic.
James J. Hume, 74, longtime Lodge Pole resident, died at home Wednesday evening from a cerebal hemorrhage after two years of declining health. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 PM at the Lodge Pole Methodist church with Rev. Vincent Beebe and Rev. G M Brox officiating. Interment in Sidney cemetery. Craig Funeral Home of Lodge Pole in charge. Survived by widow Anna.
W. J. Braham formerly Sidney school superintendent began duties as secretary of the Nebraska State Teachers Association in Lincoln. He was elected after the death of Charles Bowers and could not assume the role until the North Platte school term ended.

William Rezanina, 26, was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary by District Judge J. L. Tewnell after pleading guilty to burglarizing the White Eagle filling station. He admitted to breaking into four stations the same night, blamed liquor for his crimes, and noted prior thefts. The judge warned of possible harsher outcomes, recalling a prior parole violation. Two other men, Robert Foreman and Claude Robison, also received sentences for assault.
The following St Patrick's Academy students earned an average of 90 percent or higher last term. Lists by class name numerous seniors to freshmen and two high school music students among the top marks.
With under thirty days for filings, I L Pindell paid the fee and announced reelection to county clerk on the republican ticket. Alfred Arnell of Potter filed as Republican for third district commissioner, and C P Herboldsheimer joined Democrats seeking the seat held by Ford Weikhorst.
The final of four crop insurance meetings is set for tonight at eight in the district court room in Sidney. Earlier sessions were held in Potter Lodge Pole and Dalton where farmers learned details and costs of the wheat insurance for 1939. Cheyenne county is expected to participate heavily as the program offers a guaranteed income if the crop is lost.
West Dalton growers report hail damage confined to the northwest county area. Fields west of Dalton suffered up to fifty percent damage from a Tuesday night storm. Most severe hail events this spring have tracked along the northern county fringe, affecting Morrill and Garden counties.
Mickey Green winner of a Veterans of Foreign Wars speech contest spoke to the Rotary club Friday night. He outlined the requirements of a good citizen and Rotarians praised his well prepared and excellently delivered address. Musical entertainment was provided by W. P. Ackerman and a youthful orchestra.
Sidney hosts a two day trade event promoting No Sales Tax in Nebraska aimed at Colorado shoppers and Nebraskans. Local retailers advertise hundreds of special values through Friday and Saturday with a plan to boost cross state commerce and emphasize weekly savings.
Plans for the 49th annual convention of the Nebraska Stock Growers Association at Scottsbluff June 9 10 and 11 progress rapidly. Secretary Frank M Broome says the gathering will exceed prior years with more than 1000 cattlemen from across Nebraska. Governors and congressmen are on the program and Scottsbluff Mayor Rymer will give the opening day welcome.
Sixteen girls entered the Fox theatre popularity contest to determine Miss Cheyenne County. Coupons will be issued by the theatre and cooperating merchants next week to vote for favorites. A local notice announces a public hearing on the county budget scheduled for next Monday in Cheyenne. The piece also references world events, Russia, and Stalin in a contrasting editorial aside about foreign policy and potential U.S. involvement in Europe.
Extension entomologist O S Bare from the Nebraska college of agriculture warns that poisoning of hatched grasshoppers between now and mid June is needed to avert crop damage. He notes hatch is two weeks late and hoppers are causing little damage, with hot dry weather likely to increase activity. 50 to 65 percent hatched in eastern Nebraska and up to 80 percent in the western part.

Farmers have planted about two thirds of corn despite rains. Wheat oats and rye are in excellent condition. The Republican river rose near Alma flooding a railroad fill. A gas line on the Solomon river near Alma washed out. Three hundred yards of highway near Arapahoe were washed away. The Little Blue at Hebron entered bottomland corn fields.
The monthly report from the tenth federal reserve bank district notes minor crop improvement but overall prices drop. Wheat down 50 cents per bushel and corn 80 cents lower year over year, with industrial, sales and banking figures generally slipping. Department store and retail sales also decline, while apparel stores rise except in Colorado. Wholesale sales fall 13 percent.
The City of Sidney renews free swimming for children under 12 starting Tuesday June 7. Robert Dyke Jr. expected to stay as pool manager. Tickets through the city clerk June 6. Adult season tickets sell for 2.50.
A Sidney survey shows May business will likely fail to rise much over May 1937 despite best crop prospects. Merchants report improved interest in buying but struggle to close sales as farmers delay large scale purchases until their wheat is stored, reflecting years of crop-building delays.
A. E. Anderson and R. C. Kinch report numerous letters about orange leaf rust in Nebraska wheat. Anderson has not seen the rust. Kinch has observed it. Other sources say orange leaf rust is less dangerous than black stem rust and not yet widespread.
The Telegraph notes June as a traditional wedding month in Cheyenne County. Five marriages were reported for June First, with another license issued to a Potter couple. The paper expects several more weddings this month, including one or two large affairs likely to exceed one hundred guests.
Mrs Golden P Kratz injured in an Ogallala automobile crash last Sunday night remained in delicate condition at Methodist hospital Omaha. Doctors reported a linear fracture of the upper jaw and potential skull and antrum injuries. no lower jaw fracture. Surgery postponed to build up her system.
Cheyenne county invites taxpayers to a public hearing at the courthouse on Monday June 6 at 9 a.m. to discuss the proposed budget. The board of commissioners will listen to complaints suggestions and recommendations. The budget was published in The Telegraph for three weeks to allow review.
A. J. Heeg 29 is mourned in funeral services at St Patrick's Catholic church. Rev Anton Link presided. Interment followed in the family plot at the Catholic cemetery. Gehrig Funeral Home directed arrangements. Heeg had lived in Sidney ten years and worked as pastry cook for Union Pacific hotel in Zion during summer and in Sidney the rest of the year.
Robert Dyke son of Mr and Mrs Robert Dyke of Sidney completed his college work at Kearney State Teachers college May 27 receiving a bachelor of arts degree He is a Sidney high school graduate and during high school was a star basketball player.
The Telegraph Publishing Company will resume the Sidney Shoppers' Guide, a free Friday distribution tabloid for Sidney residents. The page size is 9 by 12 inches with 4 by 10 inch full pages, advertising at 20 cents per column inch, or 10 cents per inch if also run in the regular paper.
