Fire damages heavy at Fort Sidree motel blaze

A fire at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel caused extensive damage on the second floor south wing after a cigarette smoking incident. One room was destroyed and seventeen rooms were rendered unusable while furniture carpeting and fixtures must be replaced. 13 firefighters battled the fire for about an hour and ten minutes. Henry Oliverius was in the room and is held on intoxication charges. no water damage occurred.

Raw farm prices rise for sixth straight month in May

Washington report shows raw farm product prices up 2 percent in the sixteenth month, with gains in rice, cattle, hogs, soybeans, potatoes and peaches. Wheat, corn and eggs fell, sparking concern for some farmers while signaling higher retail beef prices this summer. Government forecasts say 1977 retail food prices may average nearly 6 percent above 1976. About half of the rise blamed on imported foods such as coffee.

Sidney pool bond plan advances for June 14 vote

Citizens group backs a $149,500 pool bond to build a new $285,000, non enclosed L shaped pool in Legion Park, funded 50 percent by Nebraska Game and Parks if approved by June 17. Construction would start this fall with a 10 year payoff, aided by Cheyenne County Chamber groups and Alpha Nu Beta Sigma Phi.

Sanitation program runs into trouble with new containers

City sanitation chief Louis Bennett reports ongoing issues with the new garbage system after 11 months. Overloaded 300 gallon bins and metal street cans cannot be lifted by forks, causing truck breakdowns and service interruptions. Sidney couple raise funds for multiple sclerosis in two drives

Jim and Evvie Jones spearheaded a Read A Thon and a Rock A Thon in Sidney to benefit the Nebraska Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Read A Thon gathered 3346.86 dollars from elementary readers, while 69 rockers helped push the 24 hour marathon total to 4041 dollars.
