The county farm bureau broadens the hopper control program with a precinct by precinct baiting schedule. Farmers in Colton Lodgepole and other listed precincts are to follow dates through August 5 1931. County agent urges building hopper dozers or catchers from bureau plans to reduce infestations now for long term control. Grasshoppers have long plagued Nebraska, with historic outbreaks noted by Prof M H Snend and recalls of 1873 1876.

Swimming Project Opens Next Week With City Support
Cooperating with Mayor Roche and the city council the Lions club votes to sponsor a swimming lesson series for boys and girls. Two lessons weekly for each group begin August 2 for boys and August 3 for girls, taught by Har ry Bonham and Glendolyn Jorgenson. Four weeks eight lessons, class size limited to about 25.

Scattered Rain Boosts Crops Across North Table
Rain fell in Sidney around 6 30 p m for nearly two hours totaling .42 to about two inches northeast of town. The storm moved west across the north table Lodge Pole valley and caused minor flooding in gulleys and the Lodge Pole creek, with about 2 inches reported north of Colton. West Clearance Sale Opens With Strong Response
The annual July clearance sale at C. A. West company store opened yesterday with excellent response. Roy Liggett said trade territory was circularized, full page ads ran, and the sale features shown include seasonable bargains at cost or below to reduce overstock. The store was crowded all day and extra clerks were needed.

Well near Dix reports strong irrigation flow
A new irrigation well in Kimball county, located two miles west and a half mile north of Dix, yields abundant water. Attorney Roland Rodman, a landowner, witnessed the first flow last Friday night after drilling progressed with large casings to clear sand.

Farm Ladies Injured In Mishaps In Homes
Two Sidney farm women were injured in home accidents and treated at Taylor hospital this week. Mrs. L. D. Burris in the northwest Sidney district fractured a foot when a piano she helped move fell on it. She was treated and returned home Wednesday. Mrs. E. H. Howe of the west Sidney Draw was knocked down by a horse she was leading and suffered a hip fracture in two places, likely hospital time.

Fewer Seeking Work In State Reflects Decline in June
Nebraska state employment service reports 26,928 people sought work in June this year, down from 44,566 at last year's November peak. June figure is the record low. Private industry placements reached 321 in August 1936 versus 1,250 in June 1937, attributed to intensified employer contact efforts.

Work On Church Is Progressing Rapidly
Construction on the enlarged Catholic church progresses rapidly with the north transept stone wall partially laid and natural stone moved from the west end for use on the expanded structure. Seating capacity nearly doubles and the completed church will resemble a large cross.

The Quaker Oats company extends its advertising contract for 26 weeks due to strong results from newspaper ads. Grocers in the trade area and Sidney cooperate with the Telegraph for the second schedule. The first ad on August 6 will list local grocers, with a Wright Dayton monoplane glider offered for two trademarks or four from small Quaker oats packages. Dealers must submit trademarks to the office to receive the glider.

Mat Spreading Is Started This Week
Blade machines began spreading two inch bituminous mat over Ninth avenue as Inland Construction finishes preparation. The clay and gravel aggregate were mixed with hot oil by a large auger, creating a surface that will be nearly as hard as concrete after rolling and sealing.

Terrific Dreath Of 46 Years Ago Recalled
Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of the hot wind of July 26 1894 that blasted corn crops across the middlewest. The wind from the southwest drove temperatures to 106 at the university observatory and caused widespread crop ruin in several states. Reports of damage followed the next day.

4-H Picnic In Sidney Featured Sports And Contests
The Cheyenne county 4-H club picnic was held at Legion park with a large turnout of boys and girls. A softball game and other contests provided entertainment while committee workers directed the program. Attendance pleased farm bureau and committee members. A three day district 4-H camp opened at Mitchell with 75 enrollees from multiple counties, featuring a vesper service and a free moving picture show at the Crystal theatre.

Mueller Funeral Held Tuesday in Douglas
Karl Mueller 47 died suddenly at his Douglas Wyoming home last Friday night from a heart attack after a long telephone chat with his wife Julia visiting Sidney. Born in Germany, he came to the United States in 1910 and worked for Union Pacific in Sidney before becoming a Douglas chiropractic physician since 1927. Survivors include his wife and son Karl Jr. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, with Rice funeral service in charge.
