Severe rainstorm drenched Sidney causing widespread damage. Floodwaters swept Second Street and caused washouts along the Black Hills road. The M E parsonage collapsed trapping Rev Campbell briefly. multiple cellars flooded and the town water supply was cut off for about 36 hours. Railroad embankments washed away and track repairs ongoing.
Modern buffet smoking and library cars operate daily on the Chicago Union Pacific and Northwestern Line between Salt Lake City and Chicago. Fully equipped with writing materials, newspapers, magazines, and illustrated periodicals, they represent the latest design and improvements. The Overland Limited runs these cars daily, with Union Pacific the first western line to inaugurate the service.

The July 16 1897 session of the County Commissioners in Sidney Nebraska reviewed minutes, approved claims for General and Bridge Funds, and noted re fund of 1894 taxes. Disallowed livery hire and approved State Journal supplies and insane person transport costs. board adjourned to July 20 1897.
Rumor proved true as George W. Heist was appointed to replace John M. Adams, whose resignation was accepted. The Senate confirmed the appointment, and Heist is expected to take his seat in August after years of Republican support in Cheyenne county and beyond. Adams served four years and resigned to focus on private affairs.
The Sidney Nebraska county court adjourned meeting authorized warrants for various county officers witnesses and clerks. Items include sheriff service fees 400 for Aliwood D McAleese and expenses for Wm Shoemaker J E Ickes and others with bridge work and freight costs noted. The next session is set for Monday August 23 1897 at 9 o'clock.
Sidney reports the sudden death of Jerry McCarthy a 39 year old stockman north of Colton from a lung hemorrhage Sunday evening He had served in the 21st Infantry married Ella Boreson and after leaving the army built a cattle herd Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Tuesday and he was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
Invitations announce the marriage of Miss Emily Mahr to Mr. George Reinhardt at Getzman Lutheran Church on the south divide Monday evening July 28. The groom is a progressive jeweler and the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Nicholas Mahr. Friends have long offered congratulations.
