Senate tour ties Sidney trade school bid to Sioux depot

Nebraska lawmakers led by Sen. George Fleming toured Sioux Army Depot to assess its suitability for a state trade school. Gov. Morrison hinted he may veto LB176 unless Sidney is chosen, arguing the state should not spend on brick and mortar if land and buildings can be obtained at Sioux.

Governor Receives Defense Nod on Sidney Depot Assets

Gov Frank Morrison reported a Defense Department telegram prioritizing Sioux Army Depot property for Sidney’s recovery. The Office of Economic Adjustment says equipment will support Sidney’s post shutdown plans and could transfer with any state acquisition of the depot.

Paul Martin Heads 12 State Foundation On Mineral Law

Paul L. Martin of Sidney was elected president of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation at Denver during the Rocky Mountain Mineral Oil Institute convention. The foundation links law school deans and industry reps from 12 states and aims to research and publish rock mineral and oil and gas law with plans for water law study. Headquarters are at the University of Colorado Boulder. Martin succeeds Hal Bailey. Roscoe Walker Jr was named president-elect.

Services Set for Frank Hengl in Sidney

Frank Hengl 75 a Cheyenne County native died Friday after a lengthy Illness at Memorial Hospital Sidney. Services Tuesday July 20 at 10 am at First Methodist Church with Rev John Stayton officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. He worked 43 years for Union Pacific retiring in 1955. Survivors include Sophie his wife six sons three daughters two sisters three brothers and 27 grandchildren. Memorials requested to First Methodist Church Sidney.

Dusty collision on county road injures driver and demolishes truck

A 3:50 p.m. Saturday collision on a dusty county road one mile east and three-quarters south of Dalton involved a 1959 Ford driven by Gary Bahr of Almont North Dakota and a 1950 Chevrolet pickup driven by Ben Pelster of Dalton. Dust obscured visibility as Pelster passed three oncoming trucks and struck the unseen fourth. damages were 900 dollars to the Bahr truck and total loss for the Pelster vehicle. Pelster received minor bruises and cuts from glass.

Weekend Heat Persists With Humidity Pressures

The weekend brought temperatures in the nineties with humidity around 30 percent creating heat index near 100 degrees. Rain Sunday boosted humidity to 65 percent by late morning. weekend highs reached 94 and 90 degrees with measurable rainfall and alternating warm spells.

Panhandle forecast shows scattered storms and near normal temps

Partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with scattered afternoon and evening thunder showers. Low temperatures 55 to 65 and highs around 85 to 95. Five day outlook calls for temperatures near normal through Saturday with highs near 90 and lows near 60, with daily thunderstorms.

Jack Ramm a former Sidney man and wire chief for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co drowned in South Long Lake near Brainard Minnesota Sunday about 430 p m Friends say the Ramms lived in Sidney from 1954 to 1957 He is survived by his wife and five children with two married Services were tentatively set for Wednesday at North Platte with burial in Omaha

Mrs Worth of Dalton Died in Boulder

Mrs. Vira Worth of Dalton died Sunday in Boulder Colorado where she visited her daughter Mrs Byron Wells. She had a heart attack about two weeks earlier and was hospitalized. Services set for Thursday July 22 at 10 a.m. in Dalton with ministers Don Price and Melvin Morrow. Burial in Dalton cemetery. Craig Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Cheyenne County leads state oil activity this week with five new or planned locations. Kimbark Exploration No. 2 Tompsett near Huntsman expands the field using its own tools. Worrisome Harvest Delayed by Continued Rain Across Regions

Harvest in Cheyenne County and nearby districts stalled by weekend rain and high humidity 65 percent at Sidney airport. Reported rainfall ranged from trace to seven inches with hail and lightning. Wheat test weights fell to 50s and 40s in places as weeds rust rots damaged yields estimated 10 to 20 bushels per acre in some areas. several elevators report busy weekends and mixed grain moisture.
