1000 Combines Needed At Kimball In 1947 Harvest
It will take 750 to 1000 outside combines to cut the 1947 wheat crop in Kimball area, with at least 18,000,000 bushels expected if conditions hold. An army of itinerant cutters now moving north from Kansas will supply machines, entering Nebraska in about 11 days. Harvest likely slows until July 25. much wheat is down and fields are tough due to June moisture and a late snow storm. County farmers store much of the 1946 crop and fix storage space for the new yield.

Enraged bull injures Lafler. sons save him
Leon Lafler, a noted south table farmer, was struck by a pet bull in the corral, breaking his right hip. His sons Robert and Charles rushed to aid him as Dr. B. H. Grimm treated him before he was taken by ambulance to Taylor Hospital. Recovery is expected to take about three weeks before casting.

Drilling Resumes At Nerud No 1 And Lovercheck No 1 Wells
Drilling resumed Sunday on the Nerud No 1 oil test well five miles southwest of Bridgeport after a brief halt to case off artesian water at 640 feet. The Emrich Drilling Co states equipment can reach 10,000 feet without a halt, with Bridgeport residents contributing capital. Lovercheck No 1 oil well west of Harrisburg, troubled by machinery issues last week, is also set to resume drilling.

More Men Enlist In Sidney Guard Unit
Nine more members were signed up for the National Guard at a meeting last Wednesday evening. Captain Lawrence M. Clinton reported the total needed for activating the infantry company has not yet been reached. He plans to speak to civic and service clubs to spread the word and attract support. Other Nebraska cities face the same difficulty in forming new companies, but enlistments tend to grow once units start.

Benish Rites Held Monday
Mrs. Al Benish 71 died after a May stroke. Funeral services were held at Gehrig Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Gardner officiating. Interment at Sidney Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Viola and husband, and son Irvin who died in 1923. native of Czecho Slovakia born 1875. The Benish family has long Cheyenne County roots.

Deputy Sheriff Arnold Braasch returned from Winner South Carolina with Bill S Johnson 20 wanted on a petty larceny charge for taking a buck jack from Roy Nelson Potter. Johnson is questioned over a series of bad checks and a possible felony case. A lookout was issued for Robert L Guthrie wanted for removing mortgaged property from Sioux Ordnance Depot and The Platte Valley Finance Co. He is believed to be at large but will be returned for trial. F Max Stone was released on 1000 bond after being brought from California on a criminal complaint and preliminary hearing set for July 23. He faces a falsified document charge and possible larceny in wheat sales.

The 1947 wheat loan program, administered by County Agricultural Conservation Committees under PMA, offers loans on farm or warehouse stored wheat through Dec 31, 1947, maturing on demand or by Apr 30, 1948, with rates at 90 percent of parity minus freight. Eligible producers include individuals, partnerships, or legal entities producing 1947 wheat. wheat must grade No 3 or better, or No 4 or 5 by test weight.
