Nebraska prison deaths to be discussed at Vitek news conference
Nebraska Correctional Service Department head Joseph Vitek will hold a news conference to address two inmate deaths at the Nebraska Penal Complex. The incidents sparked a six hour prisoner protest and renewed calls for an investigation into administration quality. The Sidney youth Shawn Sparks, 16, died from an apparent electrocution after touching an exposed fan coil. Donald Routhier, who hanged himself with a braided bedsheet, was found six hours later after an earlier escape attempt. Sparks had been serving one to three years for third degree arson. Routhier had prior jail escape history.

Jeffrey Reichmuth 21 Leigh was a driver in one vehicle with Stoffel as passenger. Burt Sparks 23 Decatur died in a motorcycle car crash north of Decatur on U.S. 73. Dan Eagleton Decatur was injured. Sparks and Eagleton were not wearing helmets. Ted Smith 19 Decatur drove the southbound car involved.
