City considers 1975 76 budget with $300,000 cut

Sidney Plaza Shopping Center plans advance in Sidney

Kansas City firm plans three architectural schemes for the Sidney Plaza Shopping Center to be built on State Highway 19 in southeast Sidney. Marty Goodman of the Leo Blasenberg Co says the project is moving forward after delays and will include a supermarket and specialty shops with about 86 000 square feet and parking for 500 cars. A groundbreaking ceremony and tenant announcements are expected once final designs are reviewed and a press conference is held.

Loan rate set in county for 1975 wheat loans

Cheyenne County ASCS Director Lawrence Thompson announced a county loan rate of 1.22 per bushel for 1975 crop wheat. The rate aligns with a 1.37 national average and includes protein premiums for higher protein wheat. Discounts for garlicky wheat rise. red durum and sample grade wheat are ineligible for loans.

Roadway Confluence sculpture chosen for I-80 east rest stop

A 35-foot aluminum sculpture by Hans van de Bovenkamp of Tillison New York was selected for the Sidney eastbound rest area on Interstate 80 Nebraska. Part of a nationwide competition by the Nebraska Interstate 80 Bicentennial Corporation, the piece titled Roadway Confluence is one of ten artworks to be placed at ten I-80 rest areas. The artist will participate in a residency in Sidney while local hosts provide room and work space. Other selected cities include Kimball Ogallala with ceremonies planned for July 4, 1976.

Axle load limits to be enforced in Cheyenne County

County highway superintendent F B Tommy Thompson announced enforcement of axle weight rules to protect county roads and bridges. He cited requests from residents and groups to curb damage, noting overweight trucks, especially large equipment, have caused ruts and fatigue on roads near Sidney and Lodgepole. Limits are 20 000 pounds per single axle and 34 000 pounds per tandem axle countywide, with stricter 18 000 and 32 000 on Interstate 80 and defense highways.
