Big Fourth of July Celebration Spreads Through Bronson Lodgepole and Bridgeport

A large turnout across Bronson, Lodgepole, and Bridgeport celebrated July Fourth with parades, entertainment, and sports. R Cronberg delivered an address at Bronson, followed by dancing, fireworks, and a basket dinner. Accidents were minor, including a runaway team and a ball game collision. North Platte and Alliance squads played in Bridgeport, with North Platte winning 6 to 4.

Horrible death at Union Pacific yards claims Carl Burke

Carl Burke was killed instantly at the Union Pacific ash pit last Saturday when an engine wheel crushed him after he had cleaned ashes. The accident occurred as he attempted to close the grate before the engine moved, and a coroner’s jury ruled accidental death with no blame placed. He was a Sweden-born Sidney resident, 1868–1968, married to Ella Hughes with a young daughter, and a member of Odd Fellows and Workmen lodges.

Lost cash recovered from suspected hobo in Sidney arrest

Atolf Englert of Lodgepole reported $170 missing on the 4th. James Connors, a hobo, seen with a large roll of bills, was arrested in Sidney after the loss was reported. Nearly all the money was found on his person. Connors appeared before County Judge Tucker, was bound over to the district court, and, unable to post bond, was turned over to Sheriff Lee for safekeeping.
