Wheat harvest advances into western Nebraska amid continued storage and equipment shortages. Kansas reports 2300 combines short, forcing reliance on outside machinery and delaying start dates. July 1 panhandle forecast remains 18.5 million bushels, with best conditions for a large crop despite hail and wet weather.
A University of Nebraska field party moved its camp near Lisco after three weeks of digging at the A. T. Hettell ranch ten miles west of Harrisburg. The six man crew has unearthed rhinoceros, elephant and camel remains along with other extinct animal skeletons, led by Dr. C. B. Schultz. Work at Lisco will run through July, while another Nebraska team near Cambridge conducts test excavations at three proposed reservoir sites as they race to clear fossils before reclamation projects begin. Robert Reider leads the Lisco crew with Allen Graffhan supervising near Cambridge.
1947 wheat show selected to be staged in Sidney Nebraska bringing the event to the heart of the state's wheat country. Secretary Gordon Tobin relayed a letter from J C Swinbank urging farmers to select high quality samples at harvest and keep about a bushel for milling and baking tests after recleaning. Details to be discussed with chamber and farm groups later.
Landowners are invited to join a county-wide Noxious Weed Control District after a two month study by the Board of Commissioners and County Agent Bill Bullock. About 700 acres show infestation by Bindweed and Downy Brome. A public hearing for petition signing is set for July 15 at 1 30 PM in the county courtroom, with only legal landowners eligible to sign.
State highway patrol reported no serious automobile accidents in the Sidney territory over the Fourth of July weekend.
Cheyenne County four banks report deposits near 11.5 million as of June 30, with American National Bank Sidney leading at 7.08 million, Potter State Bank 1.64 million, First State Bank Lodgepole 1.47 million, and Dalton State Bank 1.21 million. The total, below the year’s peak, reflects typical pre harvest dip despite stronger figures than a year ago.
All committeemen for the Soap Box Derby are urged to attend a Wednesday afternoon meeting at two oclock at The Telegraph office. Last minute details will be reviewed for trial runs next Sunday. The official derby is set for Sunday July 20 on Highway No 19 south of town with a rain date of July 27. Twenty five boys have entered and are building cars. Mrs Wilda Zink widow of Loyal Zink was awarded 8750 in a lump sum settlement in a North Platte district court suit filed on behalf of two minor children Roland and Royal Zink The late State Patrolman Zink patrolled the Lincoln highway from Chappell to the Wyoming line and died in a June 15 1945 crash near Sidney at the Sioux Ordnance cutoff nine miles west of Sidney.
Dr J W Presnell a 77 year old Scranton physician attempted to pass a gravel truck near the Clausen elevator in east Kimball County the truck driven by Dean Wolstenhoem of Sidney started a left turn and the car rolled three and a half times injuring Mrs Presnell who suffered shock and minor injuries she was taken to Kimball hospital the car was a total wreck and truck damage was about 200
A Cheyenne County traffic crackdown yielded multiple arrests as State Patrol urges vigilance amid rising tourist traffic. Cases include Ben Richardson California speeding and Vincent Oddo Illinois paying fines. Warren Ballard jailed on drunken driving, license revoked for a year. additional hearings set for Giles Stowell and others on suspended license and reckless driving charges.
Paul E. Brooks assumed the role of Scout executive for the Wye-Braska council of the Boy Scouts of America last Tuesday. He previously served as Scout director in Kansas City Kansas, replacing Martin Johnson who was transferred to Hutchinson Kansas. The Wyo Braska council covers Nebraska Panhandle and parts of Wyoming.

Mrs. Hanna Smith of a farm near Northport reported on June 23 seeing two pancake shaped flying discs glittering in the sun and moving rapidly about two miles high over western Nebraska while her chickens hid in a coop. The sighting preceded a wave of similar reports from Washington state and the Midwest.
Funeral services for Clarence P. Millett 61 were held at the Methodist Church. Interment followed at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery. Millett, born May 8 1886 at Hudson South Dakota, ran a real estate and insurance business in Sidney and later an auctioneering career. He married Lena McConnell Starrett in 1916. she died in 1929. He later married Harriett Ross in 1946. Surviving are his wife three daughters two sisters and five grandchildren. He served in the U S Army in 1918 and was a member of the American Legion Post No 17.
City council approves laying a water main on King Street from 15th to 21st Avenues to serve undeveloped residential areas east and north of the senior high. Project costs about ten thousand dollars, with five thousand outlay anticipated, funded by water department revenues.
The Secretary Board of U S Civil Service Examiners announces a civil service appointment for Storekeeper CAF 2 through CAF 5 at Sioux Ordnance Depot with salaries from 1954 to 2644 dollars per year. Applicants must be U S citizens or Philippine nationals. age 18 to 62, with veterans and war service indefinite employees noted.
A 17 year old Dalton youth Benton Walker was killed in a plane crash near Redington in Banner County. He had just flown by the Winters home to attract the attention of Betty Jean Winters, then lost speed at about 75 feet and crashed. Born in Sheridan Wyoming, he moved to Dalton as a child and recently graduated from Curtis College of Agriculture. Survived by his parents a sister LeDean and a brother Wayne. He was active in 4 H and was named Nebraska’s youngest Flying Partner last year. The funeral was held in Dalton with arrangements by The Craig Home for Funerals and cremation planned in Denver.
Captain C. J. Sanders of the Nebraska Safety Patrol reports the May and June period shows 63 traffic fatalities in Nebraska. Of these, 20 were motorists from other states and four Nebraskans died in crashes involving out of state cars.
City councilmen discuss unofficial plans to modify zoning rules to ease housing shortages. Ideas include allowing larger buildings, reclassifying Residence A and B areas, and rezoning along west Illinois Street, with no vote yet and action to be sent to the zoning commission.
A mother saves her three year old son when a car swerves off a steep embankment between Lodgepole and Sunol. Driving at 40 mph the mother fights to keep the child from the door as the vehicle tips, then regains the highway. The child’s suspenders break but he is pulled to safety, the mother credits God for their survival. The witness praises her courage and hopes for more drivers like her.
Members of the Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club won top honors at a Sterling July Fourth show. Clifford Jensen received a tooled saddle and bridle and first in pleasure horse. Mrs. George Hossack took second and bronze. Other winners included Neal Dunlavy, Hossack, Jensen, and several club members entered from Denver Cheyenne Rapid City and nearby communities.
W D Powell was the high bidder yesterday at an auction sale of the Harper Building. Powell’s bid was 21500. C B Bentley managed the sale for Mrs Harper.
