Letters to the Elite Dear Editor on Independence Day

A 1972 letter criticizes modern 4th of July celebrations, contrasting past observances with today. The writer questions public understanding of 1776, cites musket fire and bullets rather than fireworks, condemns paper firecrackers for blindness, and challenges Jefferson and equality while urging more flags and church participation. The piece ends with a sour note and farewell.
