Western Nebraska oil activity surged in 1959 with 24 new fields opened in the first half. Youth, 9, Struck by Car in Sidney Street Incident
A nine year old Sidney boy named Charles Harvey was struck by a car while crossing into a center street lane near 10th and Jithion. Witnesses cited a double parked vehicle blocking sightlines. Virgil Knackstedt, 39, of Sidney, drove away unharmed. The boy recovered after medical evaluation.

Two Brothers Injured In Mishap Near Dix
Two brothers were injured when their eastbound car missed a sharp corner five miles east of Dix on old Highway 30. Driver Robert David Henry 20 of Kimball Ark, formerly of Shirley Ark, lacked a license and faces pending charges. Passenger Wesley Henry also of Kimball suffered a hip dislocation and other injuries. The car sustained about 500 dollars in damage.

The weather forecast drives the start and pace of western Nebraska wheat harvest. After a cool spell temperatures rise toward 90s and scattered thundershowers may occur, but no widespread rain is seen. Deuel County could begin by July 10 with similar or greater yields. last year the area produced about 1.5 million bushels. Rain boosted Kimball County crops after June dryness, aiding wheat survival. Harvest offices open in Grant and Holdrege as labor demand remains light. Corn and sorghum show improvement with moisture from late rains and irrigation beginning in many areas. By weekend, 85 percent of wheat turning, 10 percent mature. some southern counties reporting an early start.
