Dreuth Cycle Thought To Be Past Its Peak

Early observers such as Quivira and Zebulon Pike described the plains as barren and desert like yet noted a potential benefit in population restraint. The piece contrasts pessimistic views with optimism about green landscapes, rising rainfall from cultivation, and a surge in tractor based farming aiding urban employment.

Farm Wage Increase Seen After Low Mood Spring Report

A March Bureau study details farm wage trends from 1929 to 1935 with payrolls dipping to 352 million in 1933 and 1.77 million hired hands in 1935. It notes more family labor replacing hired help, migration slowdown, and that total farm labor may rise with income but not to pre-depression levels. Factors delaying labor growth include lingering low incomes and uncertain demand.

Harvest Prospects Mixed As Weather Impacts Wheat Yield

Early harvest prospects hinge on cooler days to fill kernels after June heat. Winter wheat survived and shows potential for a top harvest, though drought and fast ripening reduced yields from earlier estimates. Some farmers expect higher prices, but overall outlook cooler than three weeks ago. Corn acreage looks promising despite challenging weather, with farmers preserving moisture and tending crops to aid development.

Cheyenne County Shifts to Corn as Corn Saves Farmers

Soaking rain would do the crop a world of good. The transformation of Cheyenne county from a wheat domain to a big corn producer has never been so evident as during the past two years. The corn crop was a life saver last year and if it is made again this year it will prove just as valuable to many farmers.
