A one vehicle accident seven miles east of Bayard was blamed on a bee that flew into the cab of Larry Cochran's J. C. Super Service tank truck. Cochran swatted the bee, the vehicle left the road and overturned on its top, leaving him with a bruised elbow.
Chappell residents and a nearby service station owner spearheaded a park cleanup. The Union Pacific Railroad Park has 12 dying cotton woods removed and others trimmed, improving the approach to the business district.
A three and a half month old baby suffered severe injuries in a weekend crash east of Sidney. Randel James Whalen, son of Beverly Whalen of Green River Utah, was in fair condition with a broken leg, concussion and bruises. His mother was injured when her car, driven south on Highway 19 and east on Highway 30, collided with a westbound car driven by Clyde Q. Flinn of Van Nuys California. A large truck is reported to have blocked vision at the intersection. Total damage to both cars was about 1500 dollars. Safety officials consider adding a stop sign at the Highway 19 east access road intersection with Highway 30. In a separate incident, George Fehringer of Peetz collided with a cow on Highway 19 near Sidney. his car was damaged but the cow survived. There were three additional Friday damage accidents in Sidney, including two on 12th Ave at Elm St and one on 13th Ave at Illinois St. A two-car crash on Highway 30 west of Sidney caused about 130 dollars in damage.
Fireworks displays planned in Sidney at the Country Club funded by the Sidney Country Club and several clubs. The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department will run the main show on the country club grounds hill. Dalton hosts a Legion Park band concert and barbecue from 5 to 8 p.m. A Bridgeport Rodeo finale Wednesday features $1,650 in prizes at Morrill County Fairgrounds.
Nebraska plans a 3.3 billion highway program funded by a penny gas tax hike. State Highway Engineer L N Ress says build rate 35 to 40 miles yearly with the Omaha Lincoln leg first and later segments to Grand Island and North Platte. The Lincoln area interstate route may shift toward the Lincoln Air Force Base.

Guy Summerfield Shaw 76 prominent Cheyenne County farmer and land owner died Saturday night at Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Funeral at 10:30 Tuesday First Methodist Church with Rev R L Townsend officiating. Greenwood Cemetery burial. He served as Cheyenne County Commissioner 12 years and helped start the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Lorenzo 1918 later president 1922 10 years on the board until 1946. Survived by two daughters Ruth Cork Sidney Esther Shaw Rawlins two grandchildren Barbara Dennis Cork Sidney three sisters and two brothers.
City crews widen Lodgepole Creek channel in Valley View area to straighten and level the bed. A dry stream bed aids work and a small opening east of the Valley View dip was expanded as an anti flood measure. The plan includes dredging Legion Park Lagoon later this summer.
Kerr McGee reports Fleming No 1 in O Connell Field near Lorenzo flowing six barrels per hour with no pump. New wildcat locations announced in Cheyenne and Kimball counties join 472 wells drilled and completed in January through June 1956, up from 1955.
The fair board and division superintendents plan premiums for this year at a meeting set for 8 p m in the courthouse. Secretary Lowry Lindell urged all members and superintendents to attend this key planning session.
Potters Oil Station in Potter was burglarized Saturday night with about 16 taken. Thieves broke a soft drink machine stealing 13 and cleared 3 from the cash register. The case was reported by the Cheyenne County sheriff's office and the station had a prior burglary earlier this year.
The 1956 abstract of valuations shows Cheyenne County totals: 11 airplanes and 1,507 dogs. Notable values include 1,568 tractors at $840,480, 8,467 stock cows at $592,690, 289 grade bulls at $35,030, and 8,480 bushels of corn at $7,630. The figures reflect half valuation for tax purposes.
Sidney merchants plan a sidewalk street sale Saturday at 10 a.m. with face to face bargaining and sale prices. Chamber of Commerce members will display items. a Fox Theatre movie for children is free to allow parents to browse stands. Pat Heaton Sr. of Sidney was reappointed a member of the Democratic State Central Committee for the 43rd District at the annual meeting held in North Platte over the weekend.
Heavy weekend rains in eastern Cheyenne County slowed wheat harvests with most areas receiving over a half inch and some up to 1% inches. Farmers expect about a two day delay as combines and harvest crews move into the region with early cutting already reported in Devel County and Lorenzo areas.
The Cheyenne County sheriff's office seeks Clifford Varner of Lawton Oklahoma on a death related charge. Varner is believed to be among custom combiners in the southern Panhandle area and was not located over the weekend.
The JC Sparkplugs will name 32 Jaycees Tuesday at the Elks club for annual Sparkplug awards. Members with 100 points or more will be honored, led by top-point winner with 240 credits, per Jack Ramm, awards chairman.
