Nations With Wheat Production Tied to Population Strain

ERVIN Friede chairman of the Nebraska Wheat Commission cautions that a world food shortage stems from a mismatch between population growth and wheat output. He cites a commission study showing two thirds of world wheat comes from countries with relatively small populations, while large population nations produce far less wheat. The report highlights Russia and the United States sharing one fifth of world wheat with 1.33 and 6.11 percent of population respectively, and warns that population growth in Latin America and Africa could outpace wheat supply, worsening the imbalance.
