Man Held In Hit Run Here Friday

Charges prepared in Cheyenne after a hit and run left Sidney man J R Gilliland in serious condition at Laramie County Memorial Hospital. Loyd Archuleta, 20, is held on charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene. Gilliland, a retired geophysicist and local tax consultant, suffered multiple fractures.

Mrs. Maxine Whitaker of Sidney will be cited for outstanding achievement in state membership during the National VFW Auxiliary Mid-Winter Conference in Washington from February 15 to 17. Over 500 national leaders will attend as wreath laying honors veterans at Arlington Cemetery.

Oil Wildcat Drilling Expands in Panhandle Region

The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission reports six drilling intents in the Panhandle with new wildcats in Furnas Cheyenne Banner Kimball Scotts Bluff and Morrill counties. Operators include Murfin Drilling Exeter Gear Sundance and others focusing on sand tests and granite tests at depths from about 5 000 to 8 300 feet. Two wells were plugged this weekend.

Officials Recall War Ends With Pride And Bitterness

One year after the Indo China cease fire signing in Paris a Nebraska Capitol rotunda ceremony drew about 300 people. Governor Exon prayed that Americans never again must assemble for such a ceremony. Senator Steve Fowler reflected on mixed feelings a year ago relief despair disgust and disillusionment and the war's lasting scar on young adults. Other speakers included Ed Chizek and LeRoy Wilson with the Nebraska POW chapter chairman Jack McCuistion noting somber mood yet personal pride as his son Michael was lost in North Vietnam.
