Chadron Board Cuts Community Building Debt

Box Butte farmers bid for soil bank alliance plan
About 25 Box Butte County farmers filed bids with the ASC office to retire farms from production for five to ten years. Lyle Morse says more bids are expected. Bids specify a dollars per acre price to go out of production. The State ASC committee will review all bids and announce after January 31 which it will accept. The federal government will pay a rental fee for retired land and for conservation practices installed.

Former Sidneyite Margaret Hayward Dies in California
Margaret Hayward of Ohiowa Nebraska died Saturday in Garden Grove California at her sister’s home. A heart attack caused her death after visiting the sister who had died December 26. She worked as a nurse in Sidney at the old Taylor Hospital and later at the Veteran’s Hospital in Cheyenne before retirement two years ago. Funeral services will be held later this week at Grant Nebraska. Survivors include brother John David of Denver and sister Dan Theobald of Ohiowa plus many nieces and nephews.

Pioneer Farmer Joseph Oliverius Dies at 88 in Bridgeport
Pioneer Cheyenne County farmer Joseph Oliverius 88 died Friday in a Bridgeport rest home where he had resided seven months. He homesteaded south of Sunol 66 years ago, retired to Sidney in 1943, and later lived with daughter Mary Oldenburg before moving to Bridgeport. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm at Craig Chapel with Rev. Henry Monnich officiating. burial in Bohemian Cemetery south of Sunol. He was born March 12 1869 in Czechoslovakia and arrived in the U.S. November 4 1888, later settling in Saline County Nebraska. Surviving children include Mrs Oldenburg Mrs Gordon Hahne Frank Joe J and Charles 15 grandchildren 13 great-grandchildren and a brother Anton Oliverius. Wife Anna Smith died July 14 1953.

Sidney to host annual Shrine Ceremonial event
Sidney will host the fall Shrine Ceremonial staged by Tehama Temple Hastings. Potentate Donald E. Henry and Recorder Marvin M. Fink will meet Feb 1 at 12:30 for a luncheon at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel with local Shrine Club officers to finalize plans. About 500 Shriners from Panhandle five states and two Nebraska temples are expected, with a two day program including mounted and foot patrols bands clowns and a street parade. Local attendees include Arnold Draper and Warren Cunningham. This marks Sidney first time hosting such an event, last ceremonials held in Scottsbluff. A 50 novice class is a condition to bring the ceremonial to Sidney. The Shrine operates seventeen children hospitals and is linked to the Masonic order as a charitable group.
