City officials consider amending an ordinance to allow liquor in pool halls and bowling alleys. A referendum action may block the ordinance, with Elkhorn Tavern seeking mixed drinks and beer eligibility. The plan includes age limits and policing challenges noted by officials.
Citizens of Grand Island and surrounding towns sign petitions urging Nebraska's congressional delegation to prevent closing the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant. Individual setters target Senators Hruska and Curtis and Representative Miller, with 338 towns in 12 counties backing the effort. Closing would boost unemployment by 866, atop the 1,570 already listed.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce and the Junior Chamber of Commerce announce a joint liaison plan. Jaycee observers will attend chamber director sessions and chamber representatives will attend Jaycee meetings. The Scholl Building facilities are assigned for Jaycee meetings. Ralph Thompson calls for better coordination of joint projects.

Nienhueser and Fischer Construction Co. of Sidney won a $172,000 contract to add a new science band home economics gym and lunch program facilities to Peetz High School. Work starts in 30 days with a September 1 completion deadline after voters approved an $180,000 school improvement bond in June.
A panel discussion tomorrow at Sidney Junior High School features Sidney elementary teachers rebutting Rudolf Flesch's Why Johnnie Can't Read. The Panhandle section meeting of the Nebraska Cooperative Study Council expects about 100 teachers. reports on reading programs at Scottsbluff Sidney Bayard Gering and Ogallala will follow.
The Lions Club in Sidney offers a new 12 week Dale Carnegie sales course led by Omaha instructor Don Dahlberg. A breakfast meeting is set for Wednesday December 1 at 7 15 am at Yendis Cafe with 75 cent tickets to kick off the program for beginners and as a refresher for experienced sales staff.
Mrs Mildred Goddard aged 56 of Atlanta died Wednesday on a Union Pacific train near Sidney after leaving a Georgia hospital. She was the mother of Mrs Gilpert Allen of Kimball. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Kimball Methodist Church with burial in Kimball.
Don Born of Sidney becomes lessee of Born's Conoco Station on east Illinois Street replacing the former Bobo's Conoco. A former Nebraska Safety Patrol member, Born took over last weekend and plans to offer a full line of accessories.
Rep. A L Miller questions Army Engineers about leases of Nebraska military lands for grazing and crop production. He cites Sioux Ordnance Depot and Grand Island Cornhusker Plant leases, asks lease terms expirations and termination clauses, and notes proposed tax roll return of 80 thousand acres.
The March of Dimes Teenagers Ball at the City Auditorium will crown a Teenager King and Queen. Nominations come from area high schools with Iris Nuss serving as Honorary Queen to crown the winners. Admission is 1 dollar for dancers and 50 cents for balcony spectators.
The March of Dimes drive in Potter has hit $900 led by local chair Mrs. Dewey Lovell who aims higher. Upcoming events include a January 30 benefit square dance at the Legion Hall by Fairs and Squares, a February 3 modern dance by Millard Musil's band, and a January 31 high school talent show with five student skits and a baked goods auction. Linda Nelson and Delmar Maas will emcee TAP program talent show. Mothers' March last night added $106 to Potter’s total.
The Mothers Marches on Polio raised 453.49 in Sidney and 100 in Potter. Alpha Iota chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha led in Sidney with American Legion Auxiliary taking over at Potter. Three feet of dimes from Mr and Mrs Wilbur LeBeault marked a granddaughter’s progress since birth in an iron lung.
One of six extension service Handicraft Workshops will be held in Ogallala on Monday and Tuesday January 30 and 31 at the Elks Ballroom. The all day event runs 10 30 a m to 9 p m with lessons in enameling metal wood craft knotting and braiding rush seat weaving cork felt glass etching and more. Attendees should bring notebooks paper pencils scissors rulers and a glassware sample for etching if desired.
The Rogers Oil Company of Wilmington Delaware files in Lincoln federal court against Wilbur F Rogers of Scottsbluff Nebraska seeking an accounting judgment and costs. Allegations name Rogers as president from March 21 1952 to November 25 1955 and claim he violated his contract by drilling on his own account in competition with the firm which operates oil gas and mineral exploration and drilling rigs with its Nebraska office at Scottsbluff.
A large Sidney Jaycees delegation departs for Holdrege for a two day Winter Conference. Principal topic is plans for the Miss Nebraska contest during Fort Sidney Days. Three Jaycees wives also attend. accompanying are Neil Hughes Dan Duncan Lou Wilson Hank Meysenburg Ted Crites Bob Kallhoff Bob Wait Gordon Simmer Buddy Gomez Dean Wilson Lewis Dughman Dennis Wamsley Don Sherwood Glen Siebken and Dan Sauder.
Municipal interest in the coming city election is picking up. A petition is circulated for Mrs. Charles Ham of 187 East Drive for city council. City Clerk Gordon Tobin said only one petition had been taken out so far. Nominating petitions may be received until Sunday Feb 3. If more than four people are nominated a primary election will be mandatory. Retiring councilmen J. Fred Thompson and Jack H. Lowe terms expire May 1 and both say they are not running again.
The Denver Market Week features more than 400 lines of goods in 125000 square feet across a 17 block downtown area set to start January 28. Sidney retailers attend and a January 29 7:00 p.m. Shirley Savoy Hotel clinic by Miss Roberts will cover fashion trends and merchandising techniques. Buyers may reserve by contacting the Market Development Division of the Denver Chamber of Commerce.
Preble's Grocery announces it will discontinue Sunday hours. In the Telegraph notice Mr. Preble states the change serves the spiritual interests of churches employees and the community.
About 7 500 acres in Cheyenne County and 20 000 in Kimball County may suffer wind erosion this spring if near normal. Moisture has returned and strip cropping, stubble mulching, and listing are being promoted. The ASC plans 37 500 dollars to finance these anti erosion practices.
Dr. Walter Beggs of the University of Nebraska spoke at the Lions Club on the Sidney area community survey. Supt. O. J. Weymouth attended as a guest. Upcoming events include Ladies Night at the Country Club on February 14 and a polio banquet January 31 at City Auditorium. Dale Carnegie course enrollment breakfast February 1 explains a second sales training course with a 75 cent breakfast.
The Fox Theatre changes its Saturday lineup to feature Roy Rogers in Don't Fence Me In and Gene Autry in On Top of Old Smoky. Liberace’s Sincerely Yours had opened Thursday to positive reception but is moved from the schedule.
Charity Night at the Elks Club invites all Elks to attend with dinner served from 6 30 PM. The notice urges members to participate in the fundraising effort tonight.
Plans are set for the fourth annual College Days at Sidney High School Auditorium on Monday from 1 30 to 4. Seniors from Dalton Gurley Kimball Lorenzo Potter Sidney and Sunol will attend with Dr G W Rosenlof of the University of Nebraska as principal speaker at 1 45. Seniors will meet college representatives with first second and third choices at 2 15 2 45 and 3 15. Colleges sending reps include Chadron State Teachers College Colorado A M Colorado School of Mines Colorado Women's College Denver Denver University Doane Hastings Midland Kearney State Teachers College Nebraska Wesleyan Scottsbluff College and University of Wyoming.
Funeral services are planned for Mrs. Doris Perkins 31 in DuBois Wyoming after she died by suicide Wednesday night on a Steven Hopkins farm. SheriffBill Schulz said she left no note and was found about 6 30 pm by the Hopkins family. She was born October 24 1924 in Casper and survived by her husband J E Perkins two sisters a brother and a son. Burial will be in DuBois.
State Health Director Dr. E. A. Rogers says demand for Salk vaccine exceeds supply as only 83 thousand of 300 thousand doses allotted to Nebraska have been distributed. He supports extending the federal distribution deadline and notes Congress allocated 240 thousand dollars to Nebraska last year with a February 15 spending deadline.
Al Hedges reports six batteries stolen from his back yard while he and his wife were away from the home at 1617 12th Ave. The Telegraph notes the incident was reported yesterday.
Ohio's Uptegrove C No 1 in Spearow Field shown oil saturation in the G sand at 4 50 to 4 15 feet while two tests in the J and lower G sands yielded 30 feet of oil and 480 feet of salt water. Officials say the oil water break is the target. Other notes report Beetz No 1 and Lovercheck A No 3 plugged in Banner County, Olsen Field tests scheduled, and multiple wildcat and oil shows across Morrill, Banner, and Deuel counties with Rich ards No 1 pumping 61 barrels daily and 100 barrels water. Details include various counties, well numbers, sands, and early drilling outcomes.
Willis Armbrust of Millard Jerry Johnson of Red Cloud and Vincent Marvin of Imperial were chosen by the Nebraska Jaycees as the top three young farmers in the state. One will be named at a Holdrege Jaycee meet. The winner receives a sub soil plow from Sidney Implement Co and will represent Nebraska at the national Jaycee meeting in Pittsburgh April 11-12. There were 84 candidates statewide.
Waddell's Cafe will re open tomorrow after a two week closure due to fire and smoke damage. Extensive remodeling includes paint and tiling in the dining area and redecorating in the kitchen and downstairs area. The Sunday menu appears as an advertisement in this issue.
