Night school grows into large community program

Enrollment climbs to about 125 with 15 classes already formed at Sidney night school. Shorthand and typewriting lead, plus carpentry, millinery, commercial law, welding, dressmaking, and more. Classes meet twice weekly, most evenings 7 to 9, with instruction by multiple local teachers including Miss Cultra.

Sidney Teams Win Three Over Gering and Kimball

Sidney high school boys and girls posted three wins last week and Tuesday. The boys beat Gering 20 to 8 and Kimball 15 to 9 on Sidney court, while the girls defeated Kimball 21 to 1. Coach Green praises the boys, noting Bentley and Poole bolstered the lineup. the girls, coached by Mrs. M C Green, have won both season games.

Rip Track Force Returns to Work in Sydney

An order recalled all sixty men laid off at the Union Pacific rip track in Sydney, effective immediately. Workers revert to six days a week or seven hours daily, totaling forty-two hours weekly, with hopes of returning to eight hours daily soon. Replacement welcomed by citizens and workers. no local civic action prompted the move.

County road program reduced for year says J W Billeter

County Highway Commissioner J W Billeter says road building expenditures will be cut this year with no new equipment and eight trucks used as last year. The program is trimmed by about $2,000 after county commissioners reduced funding from last year’s $30,000. He notes a $5,000 overdraft in the treasurer’s dragging fund from federal aid work south of Sidney, to be repaid by the state when the next legislature acts.

Radcliffe Enters State Senate Race in Thirty-First District

Radcliffe filed last Saturday as a Democratic candidate for state senator in the Thirty-first district including Kimball Cheyenne Deuel Keith McPherson Arthur Garden Grant Hitchcock Thomas and Logan counties. Incumbent J L Kroh of Ogallala seeks re election. no other candidates named. Radcliffe, a Cheyenne county native and University of Nebraska Law School graduate, previously Cheyenne county attorney 1915 1920 and is regarded as a keen student of law. Uptegrove declined to run, focusing on business interests.

Hamilton plans Missouri visit to buy his birthplace farm

B P Hamilton went to Missouri this week to visit his parents and expressed intentions to purchase the farm where he was born during the trip.

Pledges for More and Better Grain in Cheyenne County

County Agent L. D. Willey led a Sidney chamber luncheon plan to boost corn yields and grain farming through five acre plots and prize incentives. Donors included A. K. Greenlee, M. W. Osborn, Guy V. Doran, I. B. Grabill, L. J. Poole, E. L. Uptegrove, and C. 8. Radcliffe. Details to be announced. Sterling road issue also discussed with a committee to oppose diverting tourists away from Sidney.

B M S Club Meeting Highlights Poets and Plans

The B M S Club met Tuesday with large attendance. Programs featured early poetry by Miss Martin and readings by Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Witham, and others. Officers Mrs Siocumb and Mrs Gardner will attend Good Health meetings. Appreciation was given to Mrs McNish for organizing the White Elephant sale. Tewell Files to Succeed Self as District Judge

District Judge J L Tewell has filed to succeed himself in the Thirteenth district. Judge G C Gillan of Lexington has also filed to succeed himself, creating two district judges. Tewell was appointed to fill the expired term of Judge Grimes. Gillan was appointed last summer after a new judgeship was created. Tewell is popular and not expected to campaign hard. Gillan has proven popular with Cheyenne county residents. Tewell served in World War I and is well regarded across the district.

Rippe Child Dies at Seven in Sidney

Vernon Edward Rippe, seven, died at his parents home in Sidney last Saturday January 19 from complications. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Monday at 9 a.m. with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Besides his parents, six siblings survive. three Rippe children have died in the past year and another is seriously ill.
