Eldest Cheyenne County Resident Celebrates 99th Birthday

Fritz Brauer, Cheyenne County's oldest citizen, marked his 99th birthday yesterday while staying in Memorial Hospital since Oct. 29, 1958. Born in Hanover Germany in 1860, he immigrated in 1878 and homesteaded in Cheyenne County in 1891, later becoming Sidney Farmers Elevator manager and a Trinity Lutheran Church member. He has ten children from his first marriage and relatives across Nebraska Indiana California and Colorado.

Honesty Key To Longevity Says 99 Year Old Fritz Brauer

Cheyenne County’s Fritz Brauer, aged 99, credits longevity to honesty. On his birthday he noted he never smoked or chewed and avoids hard liquor. A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he has attended since it opened and remains a model of frugal, faithful living.

Mobile X-Ray Unit Visits Sidney for Free Chest Scans

The mobile X-Ray unit from Nebraska Health Department's Tuberculosis Survey Division served over 1,800 people in Sidney from January 9 to 22. It will travel to Dalton on Monday and Lodgepole on Wednesday. Mrs. Elizabeth Schwasnick thanked key volunteers and groups, including Mrs. Arthur Borcher Jr and local sorority women, for aiding the effort and urged continued Christmas Seal sales through March.

Peetz Man Fined On Driving Charge

Jerome A. Stibley of Peetz was fined 300 dollars, sentenced to five days in county jail, and given a 12 month license suspension on a second offense driving while intoxicated charge. He pleaded guilty in Cheyenne County Court before County Judge C. W. Smith.

Beatrice Chamber of Commerce offered Richard McFreely seven thousand one hundred dollars a year to become Sidney Chamber manager. McFreely, 30, a Beatrice veteran and former Wahoo manager, must decide by Monday morning. He may delay move until the current membership drive concludes, with Grand Island assistant manager Robert Williamson as a possible alternative.

Warmer Temps Expected Across Panhandle This Weekend

The Weather Bureau predicts warmer than normal conditions with highs in the 40s across the Panhandle Saturday and a five day outlook through Wednesday. Friday night snow in western Nebraska is ruled out as a warm front brings highs near 40 to 50 and lows around 15 to 25.

Frontier Will Start Air Service To Sidney March First

Frontier Airlines plans a March 1 start on the southern Nebraska route linking Sidney with Omaha and Lincoln and extending to Imperial McCook Kearney and Hastings. Morning and evening flights are expected to offer good connections to Denver and Omaha with Lincoln transfers to Beatrice St Joseph and Kansas City.

Interstate Route Along U S 30 Proposed Across Nebraska

Nebraska highway engineers recommend an interstate follow U S 30 from Grand Island to North Platte then westward via Big Springs Sidney and Kimball with a southern spur to Julesburg. Construction would cost about 500000 dollars per mile and would not use U S 30. Final approval rests with the governor after the Lincoln meeting.

Wheat Growers Name 13 Precinct Board Directors

Bernice Herboldsheimer of Potter announced the selection of two names for Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Assn directors one from each precinct. WNUCC Not Entering Interstate Location Talks

J Monroe Bixler president of the Western Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce said Wednesday his group has not officially endorsed legislation to use much of US 30 west of Grand Island as the interstate highway route. A bill proposing such use was introduced in the Legislature Tuesday and one sponsor said the bill was suggested by WNUCC.

Rest Home Plans Get Final OK

Memorial Hospital board gave final approval to the rest home addition. Architect Frank McNett outlined plans for a bid opening on Feb 20 with a scaled down design within budget. Past bids exceeded estimates, and McNett expects more bids as spring work opens, though contractor interest remains cautious.

Lexington Man Is New State Trooper Here

Twenty five year old Robert Zapp of Lexington, one of ten new Nebraska Safety Patrol troopers appointed by Gov. Brooks, will report to the Sidney office Feb 2. Don Shearer of Oshkosh also joins, stationed at North Platte. Ogallala to get a trooper. Zapp, married with two children, graduates Lexington High School 1952. The additions aim to boost patrols on county roads as Nebraska’s January highway fatalities rise to 17 this year from 15 a year ago.
