A Nebraska weather bulletin notes 17 degrees below zero at 7 30 am yesterday then rising to four below by 9 30 am. Western Nebraska stays clear and cold while eastern areas face wind and blizzards. Omaha records light improvement with a strong breeze and a gradual warmup expected Thursday into Friday.
The federal land bank of Omaha posted a 1936 year end with 468 sales totaling over 2.69 million in Nebraska South Dakota Wyoming and Iowa. President Charles McCamsey cited 20 percent down payments and an average 33 percent cash on 1936 deals as buyers showed strong demand for farms and ranches as homes despite broader market pressures.
Nebraska feeds about 490000 sheep at the start of the year, roughly 63 percent of last year and 60 percent of the usual level. About 58 percent of this total is in the Scottsbluff area with declines in corn belt states and small increases in western states. Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa show the largest drops.
Conference schools in Lodge Pole Valley plan to broaden activities to include debate music dramatics commerce and one act plays. Contests are scheduled at Lodge Pole Potter Broadwater Dalton on March 12 19 9 and April 21 with a pre-contest meeting at Dalton on March 13 to finalize details.
Earl E Easton longtime Cheyenne county farmer died suddenly from heart ailment at his home Tuesday night aged 54 He resided 18 miles southwest of Sigrey born February 4 1882 Survivors include his wife Millie two sons Clement of Chicago and Doyle a stepmother three sisters and two brothers Funeral services were held at the Potter Methodist Church with Rev Tanner officiating Interment in Potter Cemetery Rice Funeral Service in charge
Duke a Chesapeake dog owned by Fred Stuht died at age 22 from infirmities of old age. The record is unusually long for canines with dogs typically living 12 to 15 years. Duke’s passing ends a notably lengthy life few dogs reach.
Fifty years ago in 1877 Cheyenne county spanned most of Nebraska's panhandle, nearly twice Cherry county's current size. Talks of dividing Cheyenne into six or seven counties eventually reduced its area to create smaller, self governing regions and left Cherry as Nebraska's largest county with Sidney as its seat. Nearby towns Big Springs Kimball and Camp Clarke (now Bridgeport) were all part of Cheyenne at the time.
County Agent Swinbank reports 1936 4 H club activity up from 1935 with 26 clubs 188 members and a 75 percent completion rate. The county committee of 18 volunteers supports club development and leadership while a three member executive committee headed by Arvin Livingston selects award recipients. Ruth Kinton Sidney is county style show champion and Bernard Beyer Sidney is swine champion.
McCormick-Deering News announces a calf weight guessing contest for 4-H members or eligible youths. The winner must join or be eligible for a 4-H club and commit to a feeding project, reporting to County Agent Swinbank. If the project is neglected, Mr. Babcock may reallocate the calf. A 4-H baby beef will be barbecued at the event. more details next week.
Sioney council of Knights of Columbus celebrated the 20th anniversary of its charter at the annual banquet in St Patrick's auditorium Tuesday night. About 150 knights and ladies attended with invitations sent to Oshkosh Lodge Pole Chappell Big Springs Kimball and Dalton to join Sidney Knights. Attorney James G McIntosh presided as toastmaster and Dr L A Donahoe of Omaha state Deputy spoke among others Rev Anton Link state chaplain and Attorney P J Heaton district deputy. A dance followed the program.
A M Leafdale of Potter was elected commander of the Kimball Sidney district Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Scottsbluff convention last Sunday. Dr Dee L Abbott was elected an honorary member after nomination by Harry Wingerson of Sidney. Elmer Carlson, Kimball post commander, spoke during the convention program.
Mable Stewart Talbott 37 of Iliff Colo died early Tuesday in Sterling hospital after pneumonia worsened while she cared for her six month old infant at home. She had traveled from Iliff to Sidney to be with her ill daughter Lucile 14, who is recovering from pneumonia at a Sidney hospital. Talbott is survived by husband James and five children Harrison 16 Lucile 14 Gerald 10 Mary Katherine 7 Jasmine Carroll 6 months, plus her mother Mrs Jess Stewart, three brothers and two sisters. She was born November 21 1899 in Washington Kan and married in 1919.
Sid ney health officials met with school heads to review illness levels and decided not to impose a general ban on gatherings until next Monday when school absence data are clearer. A public appeal urged curtailing gatherings during the pneumonia and influenza siege, with parents told to keep children home for even mild colds.

City officers found an August 1935 measure extending the city limits to include the city park south of town was never in force because it was not published. Clerk Carl C. Jones discovered the gap while reviewing the ordinance book. The unrecorded ordinance numbered 257 was published after the error. For 18 months Sidney had operated with an expansion beyond the official city limits.
M S McDuffee of Norfolk was elected president of the Association of Nebraska school boards and executives at the 18th annual Lincoln convention. He moves up from vice president of district No 3. Other officers include Hi E King, E J Overing, C B Ells, F E Ward, B W Wright, Lloyd Kane, John Garde and Mrs Elizabeth H Peterson. Resolutions urged a special tax investigation, a teachers retirement system, and efficient administration of school lands with added state supervision. note on adding the state superintendent to the board.
Plans for a 100000 addition to the Gering high school aim to keep taxes unchanged. Supt. R B Carey notes a 45000 PWA grant application, which would require no interest or principal repayment. A 50000 bond election is set for February 2, with 5000 more to come from the general fund if approved. The plant now houses 430 pupils in 11 overfull classes built for 150.
Over 700 dinners were served at the John Deere Plow company plant as farmers dealers and others attended the centennial celebration sponsored by Sidney Implement company. The Christian Church ladies provided the meal. About 100 attended the Monday night showing of moving pictures for Sidney business and professional men, featuring a life story of John Deere and his initial steel plow production efforts.
Louie Renkin, a Dalton farmer, faces nine county court charges for bad checks and obtaining property under false pretenses. Bank testimony cites checks drawn on a depleted account totaling over $1,000 since last September, including amounts to Gurley Grain Bay Petroleum Bee Hive Lorenzo Grain and J. D. Bolton. Renkin is free on a $500 bond regarding the Lorenzo Grain case.
Lodge Pole district of boy scouts will hold a Scout-o-val at the city auditorium in Sidney Thursday January 28 starting at 7 30 p m. Kenneth Reeves of Dalton chairs events with Don Dey Ermand directing and M A Makela scout executive. Judges timers and starters are named. program includes grand entry flag ceremony knot tying relays and fun contests. All are welcome with no admission charge.
Lodge Pole and Sunol lead the Lodge Pole Valley Athletic association as top teams with clean conference records. Recent scores reported by L A Weimers show Broadwater, Lisco, St Patrick, Bushnell and Potter among other rivals with varing results across the season.

Huntsman precinct farmers will attend the first session of the 1937 soil conservation program meetings. Local speakers will outline general provisions as details remain unsettled, with questions acknowledged but not all answered. Sessions listed with dates and locations across Cheyenne county.
The board of commissioners decided to continue the collection drive for delinquent personal taxes with George Sheldon acting as a special deputy. Similar programs spread across Nebraska counties urged by tax leagues critical of past nonpayment, especially in Eastern Nebraska. The board believes a systematic policy and county presence can clear many delinquencies.
Senator A L Miller of Kimball urged a study of Nebraska's administrative plan to cut duplication and save money. He cited about 4 185 workers and 503 390 dollars monthly for admin and judicial branches. Miller would amend the Gantz measure to include the study and seek a bill with recommendations.
Judge J L Tewell of Sidney in the 13th district sits with Nebraska Supreme Court in Lincoln this week. He left Sunday at the command of the high tribunal and is regarded as one of the ablest judges in the state. Over the past year none of his decisions were reversed on appeal, AP reports.
Four Garden county relief workers admitted killing a steer to feed starving families and seek clemency from three to seven year sentences for cattle stealing. Marvin Abbott Sidney Law Waldo Shearer and Alvin Conklin will appeal before the Nebraska pardon board February 10. They entered prison February 18, 1936, with witness G H Morris ready to support their release. Abbott describes the hardship that led to the act after PWA checks were delayed and county aid refused.
Thieves broke into the Carey brothers service station at Dalton and took merchandise and soldiers bonus bonds Sunday night. Tires and other merchandise were stolen. The car used by the thieves was parked away from the building and tire tracks led across an open field to the road where the gang likely left their car.
Walter C. Robbins of Sidney recalls a 3000 foot parachute collapse during a farmers picnic nine years ago. He survived with limited injury and remained optimistic about future engagements as doctors doubted his walking. A witness described his bounce upon impact but notes he stayed conscious throughout.
