Councilman J. K. Mahr reports the first week of downtown parking meters drew mostly favorable comments. Complaints were expected, but police noted general acceptance and many drivers say meters save time finding parking. Minor issues stem from unfamiliarity with coin insertion and occasional attempts to insert two coins.
State Senator Otto Prohs of Gering announces planned hard surfacing this year for the Oregon Trail Highway from Bridgeport to Melbeta along the North Platte river. The project aims to shorten travel between Sidney and Scottsbluff and improve a notoriously soft and flood-prone stretch. Relocation of mileage between Bridgeport and Melbeta is also anticipated as part of the plan.
LeRoy Woodward, former manager for seven years before 1940, resumes leadership of The Western Ice and Storage Company effective January 18. Charles Marsh, who led the firm after R. C. Jackson’s death fourteen months ago, plans other work but hasn’t revealed details. Woodward, who has been grain buyer for Copper Grains Co. at Beatrice, will reside in Sidney at Sioux Villa. Announcement followed Jackson heirs’ visit to settle the estate. Jackson built the company into a Sidney staple after long service.
A light snow fell in Cheyenne County Sunday night with wind causing drifting but not major traffic disruption. The weather forecast warned western Nebraska of continued high winds and intermittent snow flurries, noting January’s harsh winds with speeds around fifty miles per hour.
Progress reports from Lodgepole Mitchell Oshkosh and three other panhandle towns highlight new facilities and housing. Lodgepole's American Legion Hall should be ready by March 1 funded by residents. Mitchell focuses on airport improvements. Oshkosh sees new business and residential structures rising despite shortages. Gering plans 27 residential lots with sewer and utilities and a $75,000 ice plant at Scottsbluff. Bridgeport to host a Skelly Oil bulk plant at 8th Street West on Burlington. Competitive examinations will be conducted soon to fill the Potter postmaster vacancy the Civil Service Commission announced. The $2700 yearly position after the retirement of William Goding. Mrs Dewey Lovell acting postmaster. Applications due February 13. Exam to be held in Sidney at a later date. Eligibility includes US citizenship or allegiance, residency in the delivery area for one year, good health, and age limits. Open to men and women. High three eligibles to Postmaster General for nomination. Senate confirmation final. Written tests plus evaluation of education and experience. Neutral inquiry among patrons to assess suitability. no regard to political or religious affiliations.
An 88-year-old Hebron Indiana man was removed from a Union Pacific train in Sidney after officials reported odd behavior. He carried $1198 in cash and a bank book showing more than $35000 on deposit. Believed to be altitude affected, he is in county custody awaiting relatives to arrange return to Indiana. He was en route to Santa Monica for the winter and grew more rational after detention.
The 1947 March of Dimes drive gains momentum across the county, led by campaign director John W. Martinosky and community groups including the Ordville 86 Club under Lee B. Saunders. The drive culminates with the March of Dimes Ball at the city auditorium on January 30.
The Star Market has been purchased by Hobart M Williamson announced in this issue. Williamson has managed the market for several years. The Star Packing Company will continue to be operated by Frank Schwasnick, who owned the market since 1926.
Lifting of rent control on daily rates for transient hotel rooms begins February 15 while controls stay on rooms for weekly or monthly guests under existing quotas. Decontrol applies as each hotel or motor court applies and lists permanent rooms. A form will be available after February 1 for operators to designate rooms to be decontrolled.
Seventeen Cheyenne County 4-H members and leaders attended the Denver show with Keith Seafdale’s Hereford calf winning top county sales, joining dozens more from clubs like Busy Workers Northwesterners Junior Farmers and Top Notchers. About 750 baby beeves competed with county juniors earning prices from 25 to 34 cents per pound.
The Sidney Public Utilities expects delivery of a new diesel generating unit by mid March with installation possible by May if on schedule. Ordered in October 1945, delivery has slipped due to work stoppages. Economists from the United States Department of Agriculture report the family sized farm is growing larger and more mechanized. The average U S farm is 20 acres bigger than five years ago and 50 acres larger than twenty five years ago, driven by western ranches and eastern small farms. Nearly 10 percent of Western farms exceed 1,000 acres, accounting for four-fifths of Western farmland, with the Midwest and other regions showing similar trends. Despite expansion, small farms remain dominant in all regions, with two-thirds of Southern farms, half of Eastern, two-fifths of Western, and a third of Midwestern farms under 100 acres.
The Sidney Federal Savings and Loan association declared a four percent dividend for 1946, maintaining a 47 year dividend record since 1899. Directors Roy Greenlee C Jones and Paul L Martin were reelected. Officers are Leon Fine Marius Christensen and Leslie Neubauer. Undivided profits 16154.67 and reserve 17507.72. First mortgage loans total 203214.31. Total statement 215966.05.
Wilson D. Harris, 27, an ammunition handler at Sioux Ordnance Depot, died Saturday. A World War II veteran and native of Birkville, Alabama, his body will be sent to Montgomery for burial. The Craig Home for Funerals handles arrangements.

Sidney Council No.1861 Knights of Columbus held their annual banquet Thursday in St Patrick's Academy auditorium with over two hundred in attendance. Out of town guests included Father Keller of Ogallala Father Miles of Chappell and Walter Schoenburg of Cheyenne. Principal speaker was Vincent Mulvaney of Cheyenne former State Deputy and Master of the Fourth Degree Wyoming.
A $265,000 street improvement project in the residential area will have bids opened Wednesday night. City engineer E. Y. Grupe of Scottsbluff expects several bidders. Inland Construction Co. of Omaha was low bidder last fall but was ruled invalid after plan changes and a higher estimate. The project includes storm sewers curbs gutters and asphalt paving in the west part built up after the war.
Secretary Gordon Tobin lists 16 accomplishments for 1946 in a bulletin to members ahead of the 1947 membership drive. Initiatives include city clean up and paint up, a census, a new Sidney and Cheyenne County folder, a municipal airport program, a feature story in the Omaha World-Herald, fair fireworks, funds for the catch a calf contest, and housing for 1100 teachers among other efforts.
The Sidney-Sterling basketball game moves from Sterling to Sidney due to a gym conflict. The Maroon hosts an added home game while reducing away games to six, with an eight o clock tip and a seven o clock prelim. St Patrick s Academy eagers face Potter in a makeup game and then meet Peetz tonight before Brule Friday and York on Sunday.
A one day safety conference at Sidney High School features officials from Nebraska and Colorado patrols plus local leaders. The program runs 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with sessions for officials students and adults, and free admission for the public.
New district officers for the Wye Braska region are being installed at meetings. Carl Ziegler becomes Sidney district head with Ray Graff and Francis Hiner as vice chairman and commissioner. Other installations include Dr. H A Blackstone in Bridgeport, Otto Stelk in Bayard, A W Moore in Bayard, Paul Temple in Lewellen, John Ross and William Main in Oshkosh, John Pace in Chappell, F A Schroeder in Chappell, Almeron F Steele in Chappell, and N C Brown in Harrison with William Anderson and Clarence Lauder. All men are from Chadron.
A farmer living south of town called The Telegraph to say parking meters are fine He noted he can drive to town find a spot and conduct business without endless parking searches The caller spoke kindly and the newspaper decided to pass along the sentiment, noting it was a rare compliment.
Leila Garrelts one day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harley Garrelts of Lodgepole died Friday and was buried Saturday in Weyerts cemetery with Rev Bor chardt officiating. Services were at the graveside. Survived by parents and one brother Larry. Craig Home for Funerals handled arrangements.
