Local People On Stranded Streamliner Rescue News
Local residents learned that Pvt. John E. McGaughey and Don Howard were aboard the City of San Francisco streamliner stranded in the High Sierra. McGaughey was en route to the coast for overseas duty after a Christmas furlough. Howard was en route to a West Coast convention. Also aboard were Coner D. Watson, Donald Albee, and Sgt. R. W. Roos. All 222 passengers were rescued after a path to Highway 40 was opened and they were taken to lodges and then San Francisco by rescue train.

Beuford Birdwell 30 Dies. Dalton Native Funeral Sunday
Beuford Birdwell of Dalton, a Navy veteran and local farmer, died Tuesday after a brief illness. Funeral services Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church in Dalton with Rev. Case officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney under Craig Mortuary care. He was born December 16, 1921 in Denver, moved to Dalton as a youth, graduated Dalton High School in 1938, trained as an electrician in Chicago, served 1944 45 in the Navy, married Ruth Thurlond in 1940, and is survived by his widow, daughter Patricia Joan, brother Lelana, and his parents A L and Mrs Birdwell.

Land Bank Heads Are Re-elected For Coming Year

Fire Destroys House Injuring Neighbor After Overheated Stove
An overheated oil stove caused a house fire early Thursday, nearly destroying a three room home owned by the Krueger family near the Union Pacific round house. Neighbor Grace Heath suffered severe burns while rushing in to rescue occupants. Firefighters battled the blaze for about 90 minutes as wind spread flames, leaving the structure a total loss with possessions likely totaling many gifts and unknown value.

School Lease Sales Slowdown Moves Forward in Nebraska
