The Sidney School Board hired an architect to design a three room addition for the Northside school citing fifty percent growth and crowded lower grades. Supt. Weymouth told Rotarians that immediate needs include north side space and shop facilities at the senior high, with future expansion onto Linden Street property east of the high school. Debt is manageable, with 26 thousand dollars outstanding to be paid in two years, and the proposal hinges on public approval.

Mrs Ida Simms Dies After Stroke at 77
Mrs Ida Simms died Monday morning at 77 after a two year illness following a stroke. A long time Sidney and Cheyenne County resident, she lived on a Dalton farm, then ran a hotel and the Simms Apartments. Survived by daughters Mrs O D Simms and Mrs Helen Harmon and son Park Dugan. Funeral home awaiting word from relatives.

Farm Worker Dies In Chair On Dalton Area Farm
Frank White a Dalton resident in his sixties died unexpectedly on the John Davison farm nine miles west of Dalton. Deputy Braasch said White likely suffered a heart attack after coughing fits and sitting in a chair overnight. The body was moved to Craig Mortuary with funeral plans pending.

Fire alarm downtown as wind damages wires near Telegraph

4-H and Rural Youth Groups Show Big Gains During 1948
Cheyenne County 4-H and Rural Youth groups report gains in 1948 with 81 boys and 169 girls in 32 clubs, 72 projects, 65 boys and 150 girls completing requirements, plus ten new girls clubs and four new boys clubs. The 13 foods and two canning clubs preserved 616 quarts fruit, 260 vegetables, 12 meat. 75 fruit and 59 vegetable frozen. 85 meat dried 39 gallons vegetables brined. Cooking clubs served 1,494 meals from 1,296 planned. Homemaking clubs added 7 with 38 enrolled. 37 completed projects. Leaders Verlin Livingston and Violet Shepherd highlighted state and national roles. Eight Rural Youth members attended the Jackson’s Mill conference. 15 members attended Scottsbluff recreational meeting. The group, led by Farli Gell then Rennie Andersen, shows strong growth and prospects for 1949.

Two heavy wrecks from Friday night snow hit near Sidney. Howard Skarka and R L Landy drivers faced a head on crash on highway 30 six miles east of town, with Landy’s party including his wife and mother. Landy’s mother slightly injured. Winter grip tightens on Nebraska with ground blizzards and subzero highs. In western Nebraska roads froze solid and visibility dropped to zero several times Saturday afternoon, delaying travel and complicating storm recovery efforts. An effort to fund Nebraska’s inaugural parade float for President Truman’s inauguration drew little enthusiasm in Sidney. Despite contacts, most residents called the contribution a waste of money given urgent charity needs.
