New Speed Record Set In Silk Freight Run
Four Union Pacific silk freight trains carrying raw silk valued at over 33 million swept from San Francisco to Omaha and Chicago this month, racing ahead of overland limited passenger trains under orders to push speed. Keen transcontinental rivalry spurred crews to burn time, with track clearances given and all lines coordinating for fastest delivery to New York markets. The first train reached Omaha 40 hours after leaving the west coast, then Chicago ten hours later, as a third train carried 1.41 million in silk value en route.
