Thieves smashed the plate glass door of J. A. Walford general merchandising in Dalton and stole $25 in cash plus merchandise. The break-in occurred after closing on Tuesday evening, prompting a major county search with no clues. A prior attempt was thwarted by a police dog, and residents recall a suspicious stranger seen in town.
Directors of the senior chamber of commerce met Monday night at the John Deere building and formed a tentative program for 1930. The plan aims to boost industrial growth and civic improvement with projects including a new hotel paving of streets a new federal building city expansion marked highways county road improvements closer ties with Cheyenne county a larger county fair and state fair exhibit irrigation of Lodge Pole valley a power machinery show weather bureau reports and a new Union Pacific depot. The outline is the most extensive in local civic history and will sustain chamber activity for another year. Continued on page 10.
Cold weather kept farmers away from yesterday's Farm Bureau gathering at noon. Sidney business men, invited to attend, stepped in to support and buoy a spirited meeting.
Sheriff O Ed Swanson of Kimball County, suspended January 1 by Governor Weaver for alleged failure to conduct his office properly, was named defendant in an ouster lawsuit in the state Supreme Court by Attorney General Sorensen. The petition cites Wilfully knowingly and persistently failing to enforce prohibition laws among three charges, with one alleging intoxication on May 29. Swanson had been Kimball County sheriff seven years prior to suspension. a successor was appointed after the action.
C M Andrews, now in Lena Illinois managing Farmers Exchange life saver branch reports big sales growth in the territory. Livestock growers see marvelous results from the hog and poultry remedy. The Illinois branch followed a visit by Charles R Bates, president of the exchange, who lauded the remedy’s results. Dr C W Zike of Sidney founded the company and developed the remedy formula and oversees Nebraska Colorado and Wyoming sales.
Sidney defeats Potter 37 to 4 in a conference game, limiting Potter to one field goal as Al Ladine leads a strong Sidney defense. Wolf and Chaney contribute nine and six points respectively, while Ladine plays the full game in his farewell Maroon appearance. The Maroons prepare for a Friday matchup at Kimball, seeking to extend their undefeated conference run.
A banquet at the Lincoln hotel in Scottsbluff honored S. P. MacFadden retiring as Western Public Service division manager who left for Boston to join Stone & Webster. G. W. Swift succeeds him, with about 150 district employees and 25 northern division superintendents in attendance. MacFadden and Swift were in Sidney last week as Swift was introduced to his new territory.
Funeral held Monday afternoon in Omaha for Charles Kenwood a top Omaha aviator killed when his airplane crashed west of Sidney last Friday. Pallbearers were fellow aviators and friends watched as rites were completed. Investigators traced mail loss at the scene with sacks and checks and possible diamonds rumored in the cargo. As The Telegraph posted last night Cheyenne County faced a severe blizzard with blocked highways and drifted side roads. Mercury dropped to 16 below zero at 7 30 pm and wind piled drifts on streets. Rail and air services continued with delays. livestock feeding continued with no major losses.
The PTA meeting Wednesday night featured thorough talks on entertainment for children and parental companionship led by Marjorie Kahl and Mr Matthews. Mrs Bicknell chaired the gathering with Rev H C Welker giving the invocation while the secretary presented the full report. Dorothy Abbott entertained with three readings.
M H Robineau manager of Western Nebraska Oil company returns from a three month journey to Europe. He traveled with his father a native of France and Syracuse business figure. He also toured the Mediterranean and northern Africa and brought back photographs motion pictures and a self drawn portrait by an uncle in France.
Mr and Mrs L E Busenbark of Garden City Kansas are guests this week at the home of their daughter Mrs Charlton Bentley He is the former publisher of the Sidney News selling his holdings to Arthur Dilley present owner He now publishes a weekly and tabloid daily newspaper at Garden City occupying one of the finest offices in Kansas
Inclement weather forces postponement of the American Legion Zeppelin dance to next Wednesday at the new John Deere building. The event was scheduled for last night and features a community social in the facility.
The daily market report from the Secular-Bishop office notes disappointing foreign demand for wheat with wheat closing slightly lower and other small grains also easing. The National Farmers Co operative association was reported buying heavily in the northwest as very cold weather extended into southern wheat regions.
Attorney General Sorensen announced that Frank S. Howell of Omaha will be named special attorney to assist in bank mismanagement cases from the Shallenberger investigation. Investigators have gathered evidence, and Howell will handle civil and criminal actions. Sorensen and Howell met with the governor to discuss the cases.
Reverend J H Bicknell, patient at Mayo Brothers Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, underwent a tonsil operation last Friday after a thorough examination showed need. His condition improved rapidly and he is expected home this week. He plans to resume preaching at the Christian church this Sunday.
Zwickl's grocery announces a one day only event featuring Krispy crackers and cookies at reduced prices. Mr. Zwickl states the sale runs Saturday with limited stock and special pricing.
The 1930 Cheyenne County budget is set with $60,000 general expenses and indebtedness, $15,000 for bridges, $29,000 for road work, and $6,000 maintenance. Bert Allington named board chairman, with Dr. R. E. Roche county physician and John W. Billeter highway commissioner. A farm bureau panel sought a $3,500 budget.
Samuel R. McKelvie is due in Sidney on January 22 to explain the federal farm board cooperative marketing plan. Over 500 visitors are expected as county agent L D Willey oversees the event, the first Nebraska appearance by a farm board member outside Omaha or Lincoln. A Grand Island gathering on January 23 aims to form a statewide cooperative marketing group with similar aims.

The Caterpillar machinery School opening sessions at Sidney Tractor and Machinery Company drew 131 registrations despite extreme cold and poor roads. Peoria experts Charles Buckley George Plen ty and H L Tenn assisted, with sessions continuing today and tomorrow and a free Fox theatre show planned for all three nights. Visitors came from distant farming areas north of Alliance as weather challenges persisted.
Delegates at the Nebraska Farmers Union convention in Omaha expressed doubt about joining the Farmers National Grain Corporation where H G Keeney sits on the board. Keeney won re election 301 to 120 over P D Peterson as his sixth term president amid divisions over grain marketing plans and fears co operatives losing identity under federal control. The decision was referred to the state board of directors after motions and tabled actions, with Saunders County chair O Schmidt noting local divisions on Keeney's views.
