Air Mail Pilot Charles Kenwood Killed in Night Crash West of Sidney
Charles Kenwood of Omaha perished in a blinding fog bound crash ten miles west of Sidney while piloting a Boeing airship loaded with mail. Farmers Earl McFall and Benjamin Couch freed the severely burned and mutilated flyer from the wreck, as flames shot high. Officials cited loss of situational awareness amid fog and hills, with throttles perhaps wide open in the final dive. The wreckage overturned multiple times, engine torn free, and the mail cargo largely destroyed. Continued report notes the pilot circling over Sidney moments before attempting a landing location and the survivor’s desperate effort to reach Cheyenne.
