Co op taxation bill clears preliminary vote in legislature
The legislature backed a bill 41 to 3 to end double taxation on co-ops, shifting tax on cash patron payments and retained profits. Debates centered on who pays income tax, with supporters arguing the co op patrons shoulder the tax and opponents warning against dual statements and unfair burden. The bill, LB382, targets co op patrons as the taxed party and was framed by Sens Maurice Kremer and Herbert Duis.

Prosecution wraps up case in Simants mass murder trial
The state rested late morning after calling two Nebraska psychiatrists to rebut the defense. Dr. Emmett M. Kenney and Dr. Eli Chessen testified Simants was not insane at the Oct. 18 Kellie family killings and could distinguish right from wrong. They noted schizoid traits but no serious mental illness and no brain damage. The defense plans one rebuttal witness, then final arguments with jury instructions to follow. Simants faces six counts of first degree murder and pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to all charges.
