Sidney Board Eyes $2 Million Bond for Unified School Project

The Sidney Board of Education moved toward a possible $2 million bond issue to fund a merged construction plan at the Junior-Senior High complex, North and South Elementary schools, and field facilities. Architect Dean Arter presented a single-building concept to minimize space intrusion, with remodels, new departments, multi purpose rooms, and restrooms, totaling roughly $1.8 million in base costs plus land and site work. a $9,000-per-court relocation for Weymouth Field was noted. The board also elected Dr Carl Cornelius president and Dr L S O'Halloran vice president, welcomed SEA bargaining talks for 1976-77, and approved several staff and band plans.

City Council plans bids for new tennis courts and grants

Sidney City Council agreed to reapply for federal and state grants to fund Legion Park improvements including lighted tennis courts and an outdoor basketball court with an underground sprinkler extension. They also sought funds to continue the Sidney Youth Service System, with a budget of about 20,100 next year. A street plan update included setting aside 20,000 annually for five years to replace the Osage St bridge.

Three Sidney High Students Graduate Mid-Year

For the first time ever, three Sidney High School students graduated mid-year: Larry Thompson, Morris Cartwright, and Theresa Everings. The mid-year move followed a Board of Education policy change ring-fenced a year ago. Superintendent R J Pedersen notes no ceremony is planned, but students may join spring commencement if all requirements are met and they obtain principal approval and committee clearance.

Busy Cheyenne County court year spills into January term

Cheyenne County District Court reports 205 new or reopened cases in 1975, up from 159 in 1974, while dispositions rose by 35 to 181. Pending cases grew from 73 to 97 at year end, with 92 on docket after Tuesday’s call. Four juries heard in 1975. juror fees exceeded 3,000 dollars. court appointed attorney fees nearly doubled to 7,770.

Prediction: Cheyenne County retail sales rise in 1976

The 1976 Editor and Publisher Market Guide predicts Cheyenne County retail sales will reach 349 million dollars in 1976, based on a formula using local sources and national papers. It cites 1975 sales at 29.3 million with nearby counties shown: Kimball 19.6, Scotts Bluff 111.9, Box Butte 34.2, Logan 86.2. It notes 1973 data show 25.9 million in Cheyenne County and 22 million motor vehicle sales. population projected at 11,186 for 1976.
