Honeybee Wings Shown Under Microscope With Hooks

At a New York Microscopical Society meeting the president displayed a honeybee wing and its hooked joints. The upper wing is about half an inch long while the lower is slightly shorter. When flying the wings join into one, and the bee folds them when in the hive. Under the microscope the lower wing edge shows a reinforced rib with nineteen or twenty small hooks attached along it, each with a base thickening. The upper wing edge curves into a flange, and upon leaving the hive the bee hooks the upper wing’s edge into the lower wing’s flange to form one continuous wing.
