Calving Two-Year-Old Heifers Adds Calculated Risk

Dr. D C Clanton from the University of Nebraska at North Platte outlines economic gains from heifers calving at age two in Nebraska conditions. Extra feed costs run about 15 dollars over two years, with potential returns around 70 dollars per calf if the calf weighs 350 pounds and sells for 30 cents per pound. He emphasizes strict nutrition, diligent calving labor, and not wintering bred heifers with mature cows to ensure a successful two-year calving program.

Sorghum Water Use Shows High Yield with Limited Irrigation

North Platte Nebraska agricultural engineer Bert Somerhalder reports medium season sorghum varieties yield 115 to 120 bushels per acre with 20 to 22 inches of water, achieving 5.5 bushels per acre inch. Pre plant and single late-boot irrigations boost yields, while extra irrigation after pollination adds no gain. Soil pH 7.8 on Saline soil and iron chlorosis symptoms appear in wet periods, requiring careful irrigation timing to avoid iron unavailability.

He cites evolving groundwater districts and state plans, urges four practices: reduce water losses, labor-free delivery where feasible, match water to crop needs, and proper timing and fertilization to maximize yields and conserve water.
