Cheyenne County youths from Lodgepole are set to compete at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver this week. They will exhibit their top beer animals hoping for notable honors for themselves and their calves. Three Lodgepole 4-H livestock producers and their animals are pictured.

A 427 lb steer brought 30.70, light yearlings 25.30 to 27.70, medium steers 22 to 23, 667 lb heifers 23.50, 739 lb heifers 23.55, 1260 lb bull 20.40, with hogs 215 lb up to 20 and 220-240 lb 19 to 19.65. Heavy weather limited consignments but officials forecast 1967 sale volume records for Sidney livestock market.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce tourism committee led by Lynn Russell calls for volunteers to promote Old West history in Cheyenne County. Weekly meetings at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays seek community participation to develop monuments, restoration projects, and attractions from the Sidney-Deadwood Trail to Fort Bridger routes, Hoping to draw eastern tourists with authentic historical displays and events.

The Agriculture Department announced that acreage restrictions on sugar beets are lifted for the 1967 crop to assure larger future supplies. Earlier 1965 and 1966 crops were restricted. Sugar from beets has been below the levels needed to meet marketing goals.
Scott Hinrichs a nine year old from Sidney asked Andy why walrus tusks exist. The Denver museum inspired the curiosity. The nationally syndicated column answered him Sunday and he won World Book Encyclopedia set as a prize. The boy, his parents Mr and Mrs Ed Hinrichs of 1833 King, Sidney, is thrilled.
Acting County Agent Corwin Mead says winter wheat in the region is in good shape at the start of 1967 due to a strong fall start and moisture from last week’s snow. He notes statewide reports of good to excellent looks, with acreage increases in Cheyenne County and easing acreage controls boosting harvest potential. A wheat workshop at the fairgrounds Wednesday at 9 30 and a Cranberries as a replacement crop meeting at Ft Sidney Motor Hotel Thursday at 1 30 are announced for growers seeking to expand options.
Western Nebraska faces a cold and wet 30 day outlook with below normal to much below normal temperatures and heavy precipitation. The AP weather map notes the region has yet to gain moisture despite persistent cold conditions.
The Ogallala Chamber of Commerce reports a stage coach secured on Front Street for the August re run of the Sidney Deadwood Trail. A $25 fee is set for travel between points such as Bridgeport to Sidney. The horse race will be the principal feature, with about 200 riders anticipated.
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission approved two drilling permits in the first week of the year, with one each in Cheyenne County and Kimball. Four rigs were reported at work during the period.
Auxiliary head Mrs George H Fleming of Sidney is elected president of the women's auxiliary of the Nebraska Unicameral. Membership consists of wives of Nebraska Legislature members. Senator Fleming represents the 47th District and has served four years in the Legislature.
Army Capt. Floyd G Hutzenbiler of Dalton receives the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam while serving as quartermaster supply officer for the 25th Infantry Division. He has a wife and two children and plans to visit Dalton during leave after returning from Hawaii. Also, Pfc. Paul W. Rhoades, stepson of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Feldman, received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Rhoades serves as ammunition bearer in Company C of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. He is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Wadley of Sidney.
Nebraska anticipates the 1967 winter wheat crop to reach about 98 million bushels, the third largest on record, with 4.6 million planted acres and a Dec 1 rating of good to excellent. Dry spots threaten prospects without snow or rain, while milk production for November reached 123 million pounds and egg output held at 93 million.
