Kiwanis Board Sets 1970 Membership Drive Goals

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board, led by Ed Cole, targets 500 members for 1970 as 338 dues notices go out and 86 more join the Ladies Division bringing total interest to 424. A March banquet replaces January, with date pending banquet committee recommendations. The group also probes a 100 year Cheyenne County celebration and approves new multi colored decals.

Lodgepole Valley 4-H Camp Forms 11 Member Board

The Lodgepole Valley 4-H Youth Camp Inc. creates an 11 member board led by Ivan Liljegren as president. Other officers include Mrs. Ed Brauer and Jim Payne. Board members span Lodgepole Potter Sidney Gurley and Dalton. Construction targeted for April with cabins for 100, and a Sidney Armory base.

NFO Leader Oren Staley to Speak at Western Nebraska Rally

Oren Lee Staley president of the National Farmers Organization will speak at a Cheyenne County NFO rally in Western Nebraska. The event at the National Guard Armory starts 6 p.m. with a soup supper and $1.25 tickets offering door prizes including a color TV, a Shetland pony, and $25 cash prizes.

Smith Ends 12-Year Term on Cheyenne County Board

Billie G. Smith of Potter, senior member of the Cheyenne County commissioners, announced he will not seek a third term. His 12 years of service conclude December 31, with him likely retiring while in line for the chairmanship. He said he has enjoyed the job but 12 years is enough.

County approves joint elections with May primary

Cheyenne County commissioners approved a resolution to let cities and communities hold municipal and school elections in conjunction with the May 12 county primary under SB 542. The decision now moves to the municipalities for action.

Potter Man Files For Commissioner

Kenneth Rose, longtime Potter resident, filed Tuesday to seek the Cheyenne County third district commissioner seat. Born in Walthill and raised near Dalton, he has managed farms, run a hardware business, and now works as an electrical contractor. He has served on Potter town board, school board, Potter Days chair, and local chambers groups and churches. His father and father-in-law previously served as county commissioners.

Sidney Eyes Joint City and School Elections

Sidney plans to consolidate city and school elections with the county vote. The city council will consider an ordinance at its meeting next Monday night. County Clerk Ralph Englert notes that incorporated communities may request a joint election by Feb 1, with notice filed to the county clerk. The plan would affect only incorporated communities and their schools.

War II Veteran Files for Cheyenne County Post

George Bailey, a new Democratic candidate for Cheyenne County second district commissioner, filed on Monday. A longtime Weyerts farm resident since 1947, Bailey worked 15.5 years for Marathon Oil before becoming a small farmer. An Illinois native, he served 4 years 8 months in the Air Corps during World War II, spending 1 year overseas on Tinian and much time at Lincoln and Grand Island bases. He and his wife Freda Bruns of Lodgepole mark their 24th anniversary this year. He is a Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church member and belongs to the Weyerts Legion Post in Gurley.

Noteboom Plans Move To Denver

Ken Noteboom Jr., memorial Hospital business manager, resigns effective Jan. 19 to become special projects accountant for Colorado Blue Cross Blue Shield in Denver. He cites greater opportunities and schooling. replacement is Richard Gamel of Sidney, formerly Burroughs Co. representative, starting next Monday.

Dalton Man Found Dead at Farm Home east of Dalton

Franklin Borges 53 lifelong Dalton resident was found dead Tuesday morning at his farm home east of Dalton. He died alone in the house. no cause announced. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church Dalton with burial in Dalton cemetery. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church and Dalton Rescue Unit. He was born October 28, 1916, married May 4, 1941 to Helen M. Schuler. Survived by widow three sons a brother two sisters.
