Fleming Seeks Reelection to 47th District Senate Seat

State Senator George H. Fleming of Sidney filed for reelection in the newly created 47th District covering Cheyenne Kimball and Banner counties. The four year term follows a legislative change. Fleming, a rancher and former Cheyenne County commissioner, cites experience and support for a western Nebraska trade school and improved educational TV access as key aims. He faces one opponent, Sidney businessman Robert L. Clark.

Sidney Country Club Stockholders Meet On Wednesday

The regular annual meeting of Sidney Country Club stockholders will be held at the clubhouse Wednesday evening at 7 30. President Tom Kokjer says the agenda includes substantial business, headlined by plans to coordinate club facilities with the new city owned Hillside Golf Course.

Neal Sentenced for Uttering Forged Instrument

Neal pled guilty to uttering a forged instrument and was sentenced by District Judge John Kuns to two years in the Nebraska Penal Complex. The term runs concurrently with a separate Lincoln County conviction already being served.

A large scale murder probe in Texas continues as investigators search every angle in the shooting death of 66 year old William Shamis at Glant Package Store in Sidney. Authorities consider a first degree murder charge once a firm suspect is located and seek lie detector tests for two jailed Oklahoma escapees tied to the case.

Mrs. Katie Jurgens 63 Dies. Rites Tuesday

Mrs. Katie Jurgens died Saturday morning at Memorial Hospital after long illness. Services set for 1 30 p m Tuesday January 7 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev Henry Monnich officiating. Burial in Weyerts Church Cemetery beside her husband. Craig Mortuary in charge. Born October 9 1900 in Bethune Colorado, she married Thomas Jurgens May 11 1923 in Bethune. The family moved to Sidney in 1934 where she lived thereafter. Survivors include two daughters, four grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers and several stepsiblings.

A Christmas dinner in Oakland Nebraska 25 years ago sparked Rudy Munderloh to enter the grocery business. He bought a Gurley store in 1939 after a hint from Ernest Taylor’s mother and started as checker, meat packer, and more. The couple operated long hours and grew from 800 to 5000 items. They later moved to Gurley with their family and remodeled life around the shop.

The last first degree murder trial in Cheyenne County involved the 1952 slaying of Mrs. Hugh Griffiths. Hugh Griffiths was convicted and sentenced to death, but Governor Crosby commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
