Sidney business scene reshapes with 1976 downtown surge

Sidney enterprises reshuffled as many moved, expanded or opened new locations in a year of turnover. The process saw Hogeland's and Laing's swapping spaces, Radio Shack debuting, banks expanding, and multiple firms remodeling to fill nearly every downtown building, while several longtime businesses closed. The year closed with a near 2.4 million building surge and optimism about Sidney’s commercial future.

Winter storm dumps snow across Panhandle region

A siege of winter weather dropped up to five inches of snow in parts of the Panhandle and northeastern Colorado with Scottsbluff Alliance Kimball and Sterling reporting the highest totals. Sidney received two to three inches and FAA station readings showed .20 inches of precipitation. Temperatures plunged with Sidney at minus 16 at 4:40 am and alliance at minus 18. Officials doubted snow will greatly help crops, hoping for a wet spring. Snow disabled wind, but gusts later caused field exposure and two vehicle accidents near Lodgepole.

Coffee price surge hits Sidney shoppers hard

In Sidney and across the country coffee prices rise as Brazil’s frost impacts supply. Stores report shifts to instant coffee and smaller cans while hope for a mid year leveling off grows. Grocers note strong demand despite higher costs and some shops plan price refits. Local restaurants may adjust refills but expect little immediate change for customers. Farmers at the Coffee Cup Cafe rely on cheap cups to draw customers for long talks.
