Costly Fire Destroys Lodgepole Home on Christmas Eve
A Lodgepole residence owned by Ralph Carleton of Sidney and occupied by the Robert Reese family suffered $11,000 in damage from a December 31 fire. Fire Chief Clarence Kripal said smoke and heat hindered initial search, with water poured through basement windows to locate the blaze. The fire started above the furnace on a faulty furnace floor, burning into a bedroom above and scorching the entire contents. Building damage was about $6,000 with contents at $5,000. the Chappell Fire Department assisted.

Brakes Fail Car Flips Into Ditch Near Ordville
Raymond R. Queein, 28, of Sidney, was turning onto a county road when his 1956 Fort brakes failed and the car tipped into a borrow pit four miles north and a half mile west of Ordville at 11 30 a m Saturday. Queein, alone in the car, escaped injury though an estimated 800 damage occurred. Trooper John Trenerry reported no injuries.

Elgin H. Wiedner, 65, died Thursday at Memorial Hospital after a nine day stroke stay. A retired ammunition foreman from Sioux Army Depot, he had lived in Cheyenne County since 1950. Services were at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Cletus Semper officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Born December 27, 1899 in Converse Texas, he married Maria Vargas in Luling Texas on October 31, 1929. They moved to Gurley in 1950 from San Antonio. Survived by wife, two sons Emil of San Antonio and Benno of Indianapolis, two daughters Beda Mahlman of Sidney, Martha Canacho of Phoenix, Ruby Wiedner of Denver, two brothers and 15 grandchildren.
