Newell N. Card a 21 year old North Carolina youth was fatally injured Tuesday at 12 50 pm in the east Sidney railroad yards while attempting to board an eastbound Union Pacific freight. He died at seven that evening after severe injuries including loss of both legs. Card had been discharged from the army December 3 on the west coast and was attempting to return home. Relatives were notified.
Mr X awoke after 10 days at University hospital in Omaha and identified himself as Leon L. Willis, 26, with no address. He was later put to sleep for a spinal puncture to assess injuries, doctors consider a possible brain tumor, and X rays will tell. Willis had traveled from the west coast by box car in a quest for his mother, recalling little about his parents.
County Judge G. P. Kratz was elected district representative on the advisory council of the state bar association at the state meeting in Lincoln last week.

Nebraska agriculture posted record results for the year ending June 30 1929 with nearly 500 million dollars in farm income. Livestock led gains with high marketing totals for sheep and cattle while hog receipts ranked second to cattle. oats rose in crop standings as subsoil moisture remained favorable and prices influence prospects for dairying and poultry.
Nebraska bankers and state officers push for a special legislative session to settle bank assessments under the guaranty fund law. Governor Weaver and Attorney General Sorensen met with banker leaders urging action before fall campaigns, while Sorensen declined to discuss confines of the talks.
A 16 year old Chicago youth found a Telegraph on a tram containing an ad for Breternitz Bakery. The discovery prompted Edsward Breternitz of Chicago to seek a family tree match with William Breternitz of Sidney. William denies any known kin in Chicago.
Bey and Mrs. J H Bicknell received gifts from the Christian church at Christmas. The church presented a bed spread pillows and an auto robe along with private gifts. Santa Claus delivered the items during Christmas Eve exercises.
Christmas at A. J. Donahoe home 2223 North 16th Street Omaha featured 27 relatives including eight children of Donahoe and spouses from Sidney Kansas City Spokane and Omaha. The Missouri Pacific veteran’s family gathered for the first time in 13 years with greetings from London and a night letter from Governor Weaver.
Sam M. Patterson of Alma retires as office manager for A. C. Shallenberger amid a guaranty fund probe. Patterson earned 300 dollars monthly as work continues, with 53 thousand of 150 thousand appropriated spent and 27,615 paid to auditors. Of 82 banks, 48 audits finished. many trusts audited. 17 prosecutions recommended, 14 started.
Christian church members held their annual business and social meeting on New Year’s Eve with a strong turnout. The evening featured a good fellowship dinner and committee reports for 1929 showing a prosperous year. Financials show the church debts paid in full, the pastor’s salary paid monthly, and $2000 added to reduce the building fund. Kimball County commissioners appoint Earl Dean, a farmer and ex serviceman, as interim sheriff after Governor Weaver suspended Sheriff O Ed Swanson. E J Dillon, Kimball County board chair, asks the governor to confirm the selection while ouster action unfolds.
Nebraska officials urged Congress to amend flood control law to expand federal aid for irrigation. A resolution by the State Association for the Conservation of Water Resources asks headwater control and dam canal projects, focusing on the Platte River and other streams. Governor Weaver and State Engineer Cochran supported the move and will push the measure through Nebraska’s delegation in Washington.
Verne Hyatt, wanted in connection with a Hay Springs store robbery and white slavery, was arrested in Nebraska City after resisting Sheriff Robert Bruce of Sheridan County. He allegedly shoved the sheriff from his speeding car near Rushville, then drew a gun and fled toward the courthouse before being captured.
The Panhandle and Sidney area anticipate a strong year with building booms in Western Nebraska towns and better winter grain results. A Caterpillar school of instruction will be held in Sidney January 16 to 18, sponsored by Sidney Tractors Machinery, inviting all farm machinery enthusiasts to learn from experts as the region expects lasting construction growth and economic stability.
The county selects champions from 197 boys and girls in club work. Wayne Campbell of Goodview Boosters earns a paid trip to club week funded by Omaha union stockyards. Other winners include Doyle Easton, Bertha Ome, and Ed win Misegadis who will compete for trips and prizes. Veronica Wellner, county clothing champion, seeks a club week trip funded by the Omaha chamber of commerce. Gladys Franklin, canning champion, contends for trips paid by Ball Brothers Manufacturing. Verna Stoll leads the Busy Bee canning club on a Burling ton railroad funded trip. Pearl Couch wins the Union Pacific scholarship with Campbell as alternate. Coroner's jury in Grant investigates a 15 year old and a companion for a double slaying sparked by a 25 gallon liquor theft. Axel Johnson and Babe Snyder of Venango, both about 40, died. Joy Crow, a North Platte high school student, and Paul Duffy are in custody. Details recount a quarrel over the stolen whisky and a confrontation after the youths allegedly hid the liquor near Duffy's home.
Christmas trees will be removed from the streets this week after two weeks of decorative lighting. The city was beautiful during the holidays and most residents praised the decorative idea.
Maroons coach Leo J. Black plans intensive drills this week to ready Sidney for the conference opener against Lodge Pole Monday night. Lodge Pole, a fast, well drilled foe under Coach West, is expected to challenge Sidney, with Wolf at center facing shooting work and captains Lowe and Portrey leading the offense.
